Now that I have a digital camera once again here's the cables I mentioned earlier. You may have both types or just the fatter/wider IDE cables in your computer (the IDE cable may be a wide cable instead of rounded like mine in the photo). Either way simply disconnecting the power lead should suffice in disabling the drive.

Is there a reason for the rolled up IDE cables? Noise reduction, screening, safety, physical protection, aesthetics? I've never seen them like that before.

Two reasons: aesthetics and/or improved air flow. Some actually glow in the dark or under UV light.

I don't think there is any "bad stuff". You could do a virus scan before or after the copying though.

Think of it as pouring water from a leaky bucket into a good bucket. You get all the water you can, but none of the holes.

Yes, my old Dell desktop used to be jam packed with ribbon cables - 3 Hard disks, 2 Floppy disks, CD, ...

This is how I used to do it before the commerically available rounded cables came along:

And of course how I used to wrap everything for max. air flow:

Fuck I don't know who's the dumbest fuck-wit on the block these psuedo geeks or fuckin noonie.

SS you gotta realize you are dealing with a complete fuckin techno idiot.
and no amount of pics or 100 word synopsis are going to help anyone that hasn't a fuckin clue.

CMN has not been off line one fuckin minute but y'all in your rush to prove your geekiness have been duped. who is the dumbest of all here?
This mother-fucker has trouble changing his shoes let alone a fuckin hard drive!

And now we got a tutorial on how to make a custom wiring harness for the your PC. Good stuff, it really is. Sending CMN in with an Exacto knife inside his PC? ARE YOU FUCKIN CRAZY?????

Who is winding who up??? This pathetic fuckin Welshman is online 24/7 thinking of threads to start that will hook guys like y'all in. Good god man, I hope you know this and are just having fun.

Chiangmainoon if you really have a problem with your PC (a fact I find highly dubious) STAY THE FUCK OUT OF IT!!!! Take it to some one with half a fuckin (techno) brain let them sort it out. If these fuckin geeks aren't on the phone walking you step by step through the upgrade You will fuck something up. and for god sakes, DO NOT go at your PC with a Fuckin knife!!!

I swear. If I didn't know you I would never believe you weren't a girl. In fact, even having met you I am not sure you ain't.

I have lost all respect for anyone that takes this thread seriously. Can't really figure out who the biggest fuckin-wit is, the fucker that started the thread or the fuckin idiots that are buyin into it.

    OK I do know.
Hats off CMN you are by far the best fucking troll on the forum. Hats off me lad.
Is there an applause smiley? can someone put it right here? ->

Should the surge protector be placed between mains and power strip, or power strip and puter/accessories?

    Both seagate.
Was I duped, I'm easily duped.
I didn't buy the UPS because it was too heavy, we had a storm this afternoon, Got home and the computer had clearly been cut.
My re boot took at least 15 minutes.
Is my problem the g drive that I haven't yet disconnected or a m ore serious one.
Hope I'm wrong because it doesn't make sense otherwise...do you mean the hd you bought is actually an internal but they sold it to you as an external in housing? If so, no plobrem with a builtin fan but if not get back and change it because it'll start frying real soon. That's what burned the one I dumped last month.

You are being seriously cyncial Frankie.
I can see where you are coming from but it is off centre this time.
I had a major problem with my small 40 gig drive that I keep all my music on.
Some of it had totally disappeared and if I click on some files I got a message telling me that the drive wasn't formatted.
I have now copied all surviving data onto a drive housed externally and un plugged the dodgy drive, thanks to the efforts of the posters here.
I also bought a new ram stick yesterday instead of waiting for Surasak because I am sick of the slow performance of my computer, unfortunately it didn't work in spite of taking the old one down the shop and asking them for the one I was told to get by Surasak.
It's an Apacer PC 3200 CL3 by the way. (1 gig)
I put the old one back in... no problems, will change it today.

This I have actually done myself and it certainly doesn't hurt to learn a little.

Do you have any idea of why there is 20 signal wires and 20 ground wires in this cable , interleaved so every second one is a ground ?
Ever heard of a "balanced signal path"?

It's completely wrong to split up your cable this way, so folks keep the knife
    out of your computer.

And you know what, I hope you guys won't be put off posting by Frankie's post up there.
I for one have benefitted greatly from their help.
Not all of us know what the inside of a computer looks like and every time I needed a simple job done, I don't want to rely on shops that take an eternity.
I was fed up with being called a useless technophobe and tried to learn a bit.
I'm not a very happy bunny at the moment.

Why, you have done quite well so far.

Now, take a look in your motherboard manual and check what RAM-sticks can be used.
Could be that the motherboard limit is 2GB in 4 slots with no more than 512MB in each..

    think you might be right.
    I have 3 slots.
I took the original 256 meg one down to the shop and the new 1 gig one back.
They gave me 2 512 meg cards.
    Kingston PC2700.
    I hope they work.
    Will try tonight...... myself.
