Although if you read what I posted in the Kindle Thread, there is a Kindle Colour reader mooted.

    arduino

Essentually its a 28 pin microcontroller which can flash its own flash. Its allowed this group to construct a programming environment which allows people who are surprising ignorant of both programming and electronics to do surprisingly advanced shit... even artists!

At the moment I am using a mix of ethernet, and serial. But I am planning to migrate to use some 2.5G transever modules based on chips seem to be available in china for about 2-3 GBP. There is a library that allows you to build a wireless mesh network out of these modules.

I own both, and I'm still trying to figure out the purpose of the Fire- it sucks for reading, and is marginal for web browsing.

I don't see how it sucks for reading, I use it when travelling all the time for that exact purpose. Ditched the Kindle ages ago. I use it for colour mags too, but not video since I prefer the netbook for that.

It's an Amazon Delivery device, pure and simple, with a couple of extra bells and whistles to attract the tablet newbie.

Why do you think Apple are talking about coming up with a 7" ipad at a knockdown price?

No, because the Kindle Fire is easily the best selling Android tablet out there, and every Android tablet sold is an ipad not sold.

Fifty-four per cent of all Android tablets are Amazon Kindle Fires, according to research from ComScore. The second most popular tablet, Samsung's Galaxy Tab, has 15.4 per cent of the market.

Although Amazon's Kindle Fire runs on the Android operating system, it uses a 'forked' version of the OS, meaning that it has been customised by Amazon and looks very different from a standard Android installation.

Other Android tablets making ComScore's list include the Motorola Xoom, which was the third most common tablet, with 7 per cent share, the Asus Transformer, with 6.3 per cent, and the Toshiba AT100, with 5.7 per cent.

Amazon has not said how many Kindle Fire tablets it has sold but it does say that the device, which was launched in the US November, is the most popular product the company offers. The 7-inch tablet sells for $199.

The Kindle is very good for reading books and quickly receiving Amazon content.

I tried other web sites on its browser and it is absolute shite for that; didn't load a page... Me phone is 10 gazillion times quicker and more useful for web content. To be fair to the Kindle Touch it doesn't pretend to be a good browser/emailer (not sure why they added them; unuseable, imo).

^ Have you look for the Kindle secrets, like how to select the network and shit?

They sounded very put out when I phoned to moan about their inaccurate 3G maps, and told them I knew exactly what it was seeing because I knew where to look.

^ nope; the Kindle Touch is a device for ordering content and reading - it's inaqequate for anything else, but performs its primary functions well.

Above is for USA market share. Somewhat different with the rest of the world.

    Fair point.

Amazon.com’s Kindle Fire was the first credible threat to the iPad’s dominance. In the fourth quarter, IDC estimated that Amazon sold 4.8 million Fires, gobbling up 17% of the worldwide tablet market to Apple’s 55% share. But sales collapsed in the first quarter says IDC, to somewhere in the neighborhood of 700,000. The Fire’s share? Just over 4% compared to 68% for the iPad.
But having said that, a lot of the Amazon services like Prime don't work much outside the US yet.

The Kindle Fire sucks for reading because it is back-lit and causes my eyes to tire in a very short time, where I can read from the standard Kindle for hours without a problem.

It's the drink that causes my eyes to tire. Have you tried adjusting the brightness?

That's the thing for me, maybe i'd get one if all the services would be available and the connections fast and reliable enough to stream/download movies etc to the devices.

For now i have to do with movieberry.com not free as torrents but not that much and no hassle and you get proper full HD quality.

I use coolreader app on my phone to read and use the night mode which is brown background with white writing

I have found previously on my axim x50v that black background and white writing is good for outside reading - should conserve power also

No, it pissed them off. But it got my refund pretty fucking quick (even though I couldn't use it in the end).

There are quite a few hidden Kindle bits and pieces, this is just some of them:

    And there's more
