    Gym Equipment (Wanted to buy)

Looking to buy a 'Smith Machine'. I'm not sure if that's the generic name or a brand-name. Basically one of these:

With or without weights and/or bench is fine, but must be in good condition. Please drop me a note here or via PM if you can help. Cheers.

^One just round corner from my office on Huay Keaw Rd too. Went there and got quote yesterday.

And at B100,000 yes, I am really, really hoping for a 2nd-hand bargin! I'm not rich, I've got two bottom-less money pits at home that wear diapers

picked up my bench and millions of free weights for about 6,000 baht some 3 or 4 years ago.

found them advertised in a local Thai rag.

they were at least 3rd hand but they do the trick.

    100,000 baht ????

Why not just join Powerhouse Gym up there. the owner is a cool guy. I think he is from South Bend Indiana or somewhere close. it has a tone of equipment and free weights and the price is not bad either.

Unless you are looking to workout at home.

If you are, I would recommended getting Scott Helveston's (RIP killed in Iraq) Navy Seal Workout on DVD.

I was doing it years ago and had to do the intermediate program it was so tough I could hardly keep up. They say it is all a person needs to get whipped into shape.

^Hoping I can get a deal on the above or if not would quite happily do the same as you. End of the day as long as it works doesn't have to look good.

What weights (range) have you got by the way? Looked at a few in stores here and they're all too low; 2.5kg - 20kg, that kind of thing.

    Chi,

I know, not cheap right! Been looking online and they're about US$2,500 - 3,000 but of course that doesn't include delivery/shipping.

Powerhouse is just down road from my office actually. I'm currently a member at Fitness Thailand but I'm preparing for when I change jobs. It's out the other side of town and the trek into and across town to workout is just going to be too much. Especially as the times will be peak-traffic hours. So yeah, looking to set up at home.

Excellent, thanks very much for the pointer! Green on the way.

What makes you say that? My thinking is actually more of a safety perspective, that I can at least self-spot to an extent.

    self spotting is ok
they move through an unnatural range of movement as they are on a fixed axis
thats why people who squat big on a smith, can move much less on a free standing back squat

my mate got a smith machine from that guy and its a proiper solid bit of kit
personally i prefer a squat rack and lifting less
but for benc etc they are fine
    we won it at wemberlee
we on it in gay paree...

^Yeah good point. I'd only want it for predominantly bench etc though.

Thanks again for that link; just fired them off an email now.

^Sweet baby Jesus! Heck if that's all it is I'd gladly pay 29k!

That's a 71k saving on what I've been quoted so far.

^^I owe you another green as soon as I can. That contact you gave me is brilliant! They've already returned a quote to me and it's substantially cheaper than the local one I got:

    Prices are as follows:
Commercial Line Smith machine [at]47,500 less 25% = 35,625 baht
    (2" Olympic sleeves)
    Smith Machine
Home Line Smith machine [at]38,000 less discount = 21,500 baht (1" standard
    sleeve)
and 22,700 baht (2" Olympic sleeves)
    Smith Machine
Adjustable bench [at]6,000 less discount = 5,100 baht Adjustable Bench
    Multi-Purpose bench [at]5,500 less discount = 4,100 baht Multi-Purpose Bench
Weight plates are availabe at [at]79 baht per kilogram, available in following weights 20 kgs = 1,580 baht per plate
    15 kgs = 1,185 baht per plate
    10 kgs = 790 baht per plate
    5 kgs = 395 baht per plate
    2.5 kgs = 198 baht per plate
    1.25 kg. = 99 baht per plate

    _thai.html
Both Commercial and Home Smith machines have the same dimensions.
Designed for fitness facilities, Commercial model is for heavy-duty use and built with 2"x4" steel tubing. On the other hand the Home model is for home use built with 1-1/2"x3" steel tubing, suitable for moderate weight exercises.
The Home model is also available with standard 1" sleeves and Olympic 2" sleeves.
The first one was B100,000 excl. bench/weights etc. This lot even said that I can provide a picture of whatever it is I want and they'll make it for me.

Moving house?? That's a bit of a drastic step!

Besides all of which: a) I'm not trying to lose weight; b) equipment in condo/moo-baan gyms is, invariably, utter shite and the free weights are for girls.

^ Hey just a thought Dude. Think about it. Some have modern equipment. I never seen any girls in my gym, even though I hope every day to see one in there.

    Cheers, appreciate the thought.

Not very practical for me though I'm afraid. Already own a house and have 2 young children. Whole reason I'm after home gym equipment is because I no longer have time to go to the gym.
