    1999 yamaha R1

I figure I need a more sedate bike so am selling my Yam R1. Its in reasonable condition although has a rather gay colour scheme. ODo says 17,000 Kms but I don't beleive that, near new tires. This bike has a genuine & legal Green book, not a transfer or dodgy book as most have.
Price 210,000 Baht. Bike is in BKK send me a PM if interested

    Colour scheme similar to this.
Note thsi bike is too powerful for people from Wales.

I am old but not yet dead, so no Harleys in my future.
I got an eye on a Honda Cb1300 but suspect it would be too boring after a couple of months. Have a couple of these SR's coming in end of this month, one is for a mate down south but may do a cafe racer job on the other.

I basic SR is around 50 to 70K depending on year / Engine size etc but then a plate will cost around 35 + and then you can spend what you like on bits to make it into the style you want. Cafe racer, thruxton style, road racer, custom style etc. Without going silly you can spend 150,000 to get something looking good.
Used to get them for peanuts, now they have become "Hip" prices have climbed. They even have a thai magazine devoted to the SR. They are quite popular in OZ as well with a trendy shop / cafe in sydney devoted to the bike and its variants.
They are sort of a Harley for people too cool to ride a Harley, I guess.

    What year are the SR's?

I've seen good ones 97-99 going from between 35k - 70k huge price range on them. 55k is about the average on a nice standard one.

There is a warehouse out near Bang Bong near Kanchanaburi that brings a lot of them in. Can't remember the name of the top of my head but I'm sure my mate will remember if I send him an email.

I've only ever seen one with a plate and it was 75k done out in a dirt tracker style.

They are fucking hard work to ride for a long time though PP if you are planning on doing any sort of distance.

Maybe it's time to buy a bike with a sidecar and get the wife to ride you around.

The SR is what I want if I ever get round to buying a bike. I will hassle Mrs Q when I decide to go for it.

I rode a bike once, you know....

You are spot on with the pricing.
My long distance days are over Mrs Q, 60 Next year, two kids all contribute to the need for a bike that will carry my frame around on a 2 -3 hours trip max. Never was into comfort anyway.

Re sidecar, I assembled a ex chinese army bike and side car last year, never again, what a peice of crap, even the parts off one Amal copy carb wouldn't fit the other one. Talk about oil leaks, it ran out a faster than you could pour it in.
BTW your mate wouldn't be BIG Frank would it?

Why don't you get yourself a 250 stroker then PP if you aren't planning on any long hauls.

I know that Camel Toe has stripped and rebuilt the R1-Z he bought off my mate and was looking to sell it a few months back. got a book as well.

Get it bored out to 350 and you can still have fun time - even at 250 it's a good ride.

My first new bike was a Kawa 500 x 3 cyl they called it a Mach 3 in NZ. It had a light swtch for a throttle. ie On and Off only. It very nearly killed me and never liked stokers since.

    The mighty widow maker

If there was a bike that caused so many broken bones and gravel rash and skin grafts then this is it. Totally responsible for undertakers massive bottom line profit. What a shocker! The engine was a very wide 3 cylinder two stroke engine designed by a psychotic Kamikaze teacher. This bike was a bad handler and a real beast to ride. The engine sat too high, the chassis lacked strength. The brakes were virtually non existent –unless you fitted green linings and even then it was at best marginal. To tame this monster required balls the size of a hot air balloon and a total disregard for ones own safety. It was hellishly fast and handled like a roller skate in a gravel pit. But I loved it. It had style it had presence and everyone admired it. I cut my teeth on bikes like that. It made me appreciate the good bikes when they finally came along. Sadly most of these ending their life with crumpled up front ends laying in wrecker’s yards. The 500 Factory racer version of this beast was a HIR-A and it was the only bike I rode that caused me to break a bone. A collarbone! What a bastard of a bike!
