Korea has no idea about beer, can't make decent cars either.
They are only 2 generations away from living in the country, if you take an inter city train you get to pass the crumbling remains of the village (zero services) culture of the near past. Give them a break, they need a bit of breathing space.

Japan has what is commonly named beer, of course it is lager. Only the English have beer. Japanese 'nonbeer' is as good as anywhere. Saki and Shochu are Japanese gems. Get with the culture....Japan has that in spades.

Betty, as a new found beer connoisseur I would suggest you locate your nearest B-Turn franchise. Sit in or take away.

I started with a Becks, followed up with a Singha, a Tsing Tao, a Red Dog and a Kronenberg yesterday.

The real problem however is that, unlike pornography which is relegated to the top shelves, white cider is often found at ground floor level within easy reach of teenagers. What often happens is that gangs go round drinking large bottles of white cider, and wreak havoc in public places. The combination of violence and cheap alcohol is not a pretty sight and can be lethal, not just to them but to others.

The first day, I grabbed this lot:

The OB is average, but cheap. Some folks say it's their favourite, but not so for me.

The Guinness isn't like the cans of draft that we all know and love, it's kinda between that and the old bottles that your grand dad used to drink (not great...).

The Kirin is OK, but expensive, twice the price of the local beer, so I won't bother because the local beer is decent.

Hite Ice Point is okish, but it won't be me everyday beer.

The Asahi dark was no better than the bottled Guinness, and expensive. Hmmm...

This OB stuff was ok, not fantastic, won't be me staple.

Got a couple of these (sorry that I didn't take an original pic, you're just gonna have to believe me...), and didn't taste as good as I remembered. It was on discount from 3.9 won to 2.9 won, but that's still 90 baht for 500ml of ok beer. Won't be drinking it too often.

    Tonight's effort:

I feel slightly ashamed that I bought it last night, but didn't drink it all until tonight... But, at under 150 baht for 1.6L of drink that's as good as the Asahi dark and bottled Guinness, I rather like it for the quality/taste for price Bettyboo index score. I think this one could be me favourite so far - hope it's not fattening...

Lastly, because this isn't only a beer thread:

I'm finishing the evening with some of this girly stuff. Actually, I'm not sure if it's girlie or manly... It tastes a bit like a sweet rose wine for willie woofters (otherwise known as Australians), but also has a kinda vodka/potato/meth aftertaste. It's 14%, but I'm not sure what it is - tastes nicer that Soju, but was more expensive at about 100 baht for this little bottle.

Anyways, I've been here 5 days and had more drinking action than the last 18 months in the desert. &, there are so many options here, much better than Thailand. All around me are bars, early bars, late bars, scores of the bastards, but I've decided not to let meself loose in them yet - that can come next month when the missus turns up, so I have to go out to get away from her.

    Any thoughts?

Please feel free to add you Gowlee drink recommendations - I know that many of you have experience!

Scribe Slaps: this is what a thread should be about, not fukin train journeys!!!

OK, so more time to take offense! Ozzies - willie woofters!!! Second largest beer drinking country in the world per capita after Germany. We love our Beer, and it's generally around 7.5% Alcohol. I'm quite happy scoffing Leos and Singha's when in Thailand but you really do have to drink a lot to get the effect ( which is never a problem)

Come on. Betty, lift your game. I need a bit more info on the beer mate, I will be in Korea June 2, I'm starting to think you are not a serious chap. Surely you can't prefer telfling all day to drinking?

The Black Stout is the best bottled stuff to take home. The Cass draft is the cheap and ok drink to down when you're out and about...
