Yep, that second link is spot on. Especially the part about the insane questions on the computer theory exam.

If you can, I'd recommend going on the practice computers in the waiting room before doing the test. In some of the questions the sentences aren't even fini.......

I didn't know about the practice computers and failed my 1st go 21/30. Then I spent some of the lunch hour on the practice computer, memorized the answers and got 29/30 on my second go.

One thing was that I got one question about parking 5 times (yes the exact same question), and then a different question about parking 4 times. Both questions had pictures in them where it was nearly impossible to tell what the picture actually was.

In both questions I just stuck with the same answer and luckily it was right as that is 9 points I could have lost and would have failed.

I renewed my car and bike licences last week - still on a Tourist Visa.

All that was required was my earlier Thai licences (which expired Nov 2010 but they allow 6mths over), the residence letter from immigration plus copy (wanted 2 licenses), medical cert and copy, 2 copies of main passport page, visa page, and 260 baht.

Renewed for one year only - they will only give five-year licences to people on Non-O visas I was told.

yes - note this was for renewal of my Thai licences, my partner rang and checked beforehand as I was sure they'd want more and it's a half-day trip there/back if they wanted something else (Sa Kaeo office).

seems there are many variations throughout the country.
When I originally applied in Phuket I went along with

    • passport
    • residency letter from immigration
    • NZ licence
    • NZ-issued international licence
    • medical cert
    • - and copies of each

accompanied by Oz friend with same docs (except Oz licence)

We were only asked to do the colourblindness test - no reaction test, movie watching etc, and walked out with our new licences within 40 minutes.

Just lucky on the day? Woman said the Int'l licence meant we didn't have to do the testing - which is a joke because it was just a piece of paper confirming I had an NZ licence.

Had other friends since (Phuket) who had to spend half a day watching a video/movie, reaction and written testing.

Or maybe they felt sorry for us - the nearest place for medical cert was a Men's Sexual Dysfunction clinic so we had our certs on his letterhead.

    We'll never know.

just got my thai licence today, i have type b visa, but you can now have a licence on a tourist visa. a letter from immigration re residence and copied 500 baht, passport, visa and last entry, all copied, doctors certificate 50 baht.Had a colour test, my photo taken 100 baht, and paid 105 baht for a 12 month drivers licence, all over and done 40 mins. i will admit to taking a thai with me but she didnt do a lot, easy as that, sorry must add i had a valid Australian drivers licence copied front and back also, no watching movies or reaction tests only a 1 minute color test
