Pollution,
( Should do a poll ..) Considering a move to the area.
Please, any recommendation on areas, in what direction and distance away from where the pollution is
I understand about causes- geography, fires.
Thanks

You mean ocean currents?
Do you have a particular area in mind?
Middle of no where where they grow rice, not rubber.
Also CM can get cold and the peasants light fires, usually with tyres.
I think that would be difficult to find around Chiang Mai. You'd need to be in a place where people don't burn the fields. So maybe outside rice growing areas.
Finding the right balance between the availability of modern amenities but quiet, un- poluted countryside isn't easy.
But I'm not in Thailand, maybe a 'local' will chip in.
The pollution you get in CM is the same over the whole of the north, and Laos as well
the forest and field burning that goes on is well away from CM itself, but it drifts down
Isaan is a fly tipper's paradise. Uncontrolled chemical spraying of fields. Water table polluted with chemicals and sewage. Monthly burning of rubbish after being thrown out of the windows. I'm sure there's more but I can't be bothered.

Believe it or not... Mr Ripley you will have to be The Talented Mr Ripley to find the answers you seek. So, you are considering a move to the area are you?
Which area exactly? TD covers so many, surely you could be more precise?
Maybe it would be better to stay at home and make your under-bridge property more to your liking? After all, smoke rises so your Scandinavian Ikea designed one troll-room apartment will be well below any pollutants rising into the air!
Antarctica. Careful of the ozone hole, though.
Ok Thanks for that.. I've since seen a map of the terrain and I can see how large that rift is that the entire area is situated within.

Wow, what an insult-I can't stand IKEA , prefer antiques of the region.
I wondered what happened to my neighbors cute but untrained and obnoxious almost adult Aleutian. Smelled him last week in the creek behind my house, down stream from the neighbor.
Trapped in some sticks, about to burst, I gave him a nudge along, I clean up too much of local's trash to fish their bloated kills out.
Gawd these people are ALIEN
I think you will find that you are the alien
Which is why I have my Ripley avatar !
I htink in honor of 9-11 (the greatest turning of lemons.. PR stunt ever pulled) I'll change it for the day... Lets see..

foreigner: a person who comes from a foreign country; someone who does not owe allegiance to your country
I put up some posters looking for my cat and a lady calls and says she saw him 3 days ago. So I head into her neighborhood, lo income but decent block homes and I was quite the display.
Yes, I know I'm foreigner, aka " Farang " ( white foreigner) but really, when the term is used in a 3rd person in my presence, well not only rude but a display of how Thais really view us- A L I E N .
I hear this every where I go, " Farang .. FARANG farang.."
If I remarked , "Black man" or any other racial slang in casual conversation..
Or used, " Thai" ( Look , A THAI is looking for her cat.. .. ) It would be considered quite rude.
And when small children utter it as I pass into their view, I know another generation will pass before I could possibly be considered nothing but a fellow human by Thais
When Blackgang moved to Udon Thani, he commented on how good the air was here and that it was pretty poor in Petchabun and awful in Chiang Mai.

I don't sense the Thais are being malicious, just uncomprehending of our discomfort of being labelled.Originally Posted by Ripley
BTW, did you find your cat?
I think that is right. Most farang (yes, you lot) are not really aware of why Thais refer to farang as farang. It is not meant to be demeaning, it is a convenient label for a foreigner without any rudeness intendedOriginally Posted by Agent_Smith
blame the Thai education system if you want
Chiang Mai - live at the top of a high mountain - easy.
Well, maybe impossible, but it should be relatively pollution free up there.
On the 'falang' front - it's a bit like being black in the deep south 50 years ago - no point in expecting the general cultural conciousness to change any time soon.
All year round? Or just at certain times?Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
around now it starts getting worse, but it can be quite bad anytime when there is no wind or rain
