    N. Thailand through a Canon SLR

Well I got another film camera, I promise, this is the last one.

It's the ultra lovely Canon AE-1 program SLR.

Her name is Ruby, she's 27 years old, & is black & beautiful. I paid 3300 baht/shipped from an American eBay store. This camera is speed lightening, it's difficult to miss a shot.

Here's some info on my beauty:
The Canon AE-1 Program - Index Page

Here's a picture of the black beauty & of the happy couple:

I had to pick it up at the Chiang Mai post office:

^ I had to pay Thai customs 276 baht (that could of bought me 4 rolls of 36-exp Lucky 200asa film) to get the camera out of jail.

here are a few pictures I took this Tuesday (I used a 50mm Canon lens):

^ this was taken outside of the post office, I think it was the first picture I snapped.

^ I think I got lung cancer from this shot.

    nice

what did you use to scan the pics? is it tough to find anything other than fairly standard 200 asa film these days?

The place I have my film develop scans the negatives in. It costs 60 baht a roll.

It's simple to find film, you can go to any 7-11 & get a roll of 36 exposures for 80-90 baht. I usually order my film from a cat in Taiwan, I prefer a certain brand.

    Thanks!

I've got a Canon A1, with a collection of FD lenses.
Lots on Ebay and many will need a service, new seals which turn to goo with old age.
The A's A1, AE1, AV1 also suffer from Canon Cough where you hear a squeak as the mirror dampener bearing dried out with age.
The FD prime lenses are very sharp, and came with a f1.8 50mm as standard.

Bustak you are almost inspiring me to get my film cameras out again.

    I have a modern SLR that I hate a Monolta X-700 and a very old Olympus OM-10.

I'd be very happy with them, but by bustak standards, not up to par.

much prefer the Russian lens ones.

I've got an old AE1 that needs to be repaired but when I took it to Canon in Bangkok, they told me that they couldn't repair it as no parts available. Does anyone know where to get some older stuff repaired? Guess I'll have to look for a used AE1 so I can put all my lenses back into work.

that probably has to do w/ the film stock I'm using. I have some expired Russian 400 asa film I ordered from the Ukraine. Expired film over 200 asa usually has flat colors & a lot of grain. I also used some Kodak 200 asa film. The Lucky film I normally use is known for a real saturated look, that's why I use it. That was the film I used 98% of the time w/ that little Russian camera.

For example, this was taken using Lucky film:

    these weren't:

Of course not. But Macha made a timely post, as he seems to know what he's doing with a camera.

you'd be better off getting a working AE-1/AE-1 Program off of eBay, it'd be cheaper & less of a hassle.

Actually I thought about buying an AE-1, but I like how you can have the AE-1 Program automatically do the exposure for you. I'll eventually dive in to setting the shutter speed & f-stop, but right now I'm having fun snapping away without thinking about the exposure.

Seeing how I'm the guy holding the camera, I guess you're referring to me.

If you want to get technical, in my last job I was paid for the pictures I took for the websites I designed, so I guess technically I'm not 100% amateur.

So what would that make me? A 98% amateur.

^ can you spot me? I'm hiding in the bra section.

Bustak, thanks for the info and I'll check around to see what I can find. I'll list the lenses I have later to see what you think as to what would be the best camera to use with them.

I have a perfect example of the expired 400 asa film versus the non expired/highly saturated Lucky 200 asa film (what I used with the Russian camera).

These pictures were snapped 3 minutes apart, I ran out of the expired stuff, then loaded up the SLR w/ Lucky film.

    here's w/ the expired film:

& here's w/ the Lucky film (the same stuff I used w/ the Russian camera):

the expired film is a bit of a bust, I like really rich looking colors in my photos. So I guess I learned not to go w/ fast/expired film in the future.

yeah, no problem, I'll try & help out with the lenses.

I just ordered a 28mm lens, I'm using a 50mm, which is good for portrait/composed type shots, but I need something wider for the hip shots I like to do.

Good luck! & remember, film is both addicting & expensive!
