    The Dodo Bird Returns

    THE DODO BIRD RETURNS!

The Gate Theater Group of Chiang Mai will restage their hit production, The Dodo Bird, starting in January at the AUA language school auditorium, 25 Rajadamoen Rd. in Chiang Mai. The play will run Fridays and Saturdays for six performances starting Jan. 11th through the 26th. Doors open at 7:00 pm and performances starts at 7:30 pm. Donation at the door, 250 Bt.

The Dodo Bird is an intense one act drama which explores what it means to live on the fringe of society, to be a man who failed to achieve the universal dream of being able to sustain himself and his family and ceased to live by the culture’s standards.

The Dodo Bird represents those we often choose not to see: the guy with glazed eyes walking down the street talking to himself, carrying a bottle in a brown paper bag, maybe asking for change. All these Dodo Birds came from someplace, had parents once, maybe their own family, maybe a job. The story of how this particular human being reached this point of desperation and isolation is revealed in one evening in a bar across the street from the foundry, where the Dodo Bird is sober, washed, and waiting for a visit from his estranged daughter.

Written by Emanuel Fried, The Dodo bird is a play to which people all over of the world can easily relate. Characters are blue collar workers. The dialogue is natural and reveals the substance and fears of each as they banter about the hazards of the job, foibles of co-workers, unfairness of the bosses, and the questionable decisions of union bosses. However when the joke of the group, the one they all tease, the Dodo Bird of the title, orders coffee instead of a drink, the play changes direction. No one believes his explanation and the game that follows and the bets that are made just to get him to return to the way they are accustomed to seeing him, makes for a tensely, revealing, and dramatic evening of theater.

The play features Carissa Cabrera, James Kateley, David Arnold, and Stephan Turner.

Do you have permission from the autorities? You didn't answer the question about the work permits.
As you are asking for a donation of 250 Bt at the door, you better make sure you are legal.

and as far as legal, there's a couple of theatre/dramatic groups in Bangok, I'm sure they know how to do it...

Do we need to have permission from the authorities to engage in a legal, social activity in Chiang Mai?
No one is working. We are engeging in an artistic activity. We are not selling tickets. None of the participants are being paid and any money "donated" to our cause hepls to cover the expense we incure for creating the art. And if you cant make a donation that's ok. You can still see the show.

There was no question asked about work permits. Someone left a rather gruff warning of sorts, saying we better have work permits. But now the post seems to be missing.
    Was that you?
Yes we have work permits for our jobs. But we don't need them for this activity because we arn't working.

If the authorities agree with your definition of work, then all should be fine and well.

But I don't think a bit of a warning is out of place. The Thai law is written in such a way as to be able to define pretty much everything except for sitting, eating and sleeping as 'work' - the phrase is something like exertion of physical of mental energy, whether or not for monetary gain and as you can see, that does seem to cover everything from gardening to voluntary activities of various kinds. Of course, enforcement is anything but strict, but there is a love for 'crackdowns' of various kinds and using dubious passages like this to allow authorities to do whatever they see fit.

Personally, I wish you all the best of luck while hoping for more initiatives like this, and a change of the law to fully show activities of this kind are permitted. I might come to see your performance as well.

    Just a quick reminder,
We open this weekend. If you like live English language theater, don't miss this production. Don't forget, if you're unable to make a donation you're still as welcome as the next person who does.

Hmmm, I notice that you ask for a donation at the door, then state a specific amount. That must be advisory, I suppose

anyway, I hope it all goes well

"Suggested" donation is 250 bt. And I think you're right. That word should appear in our advertisement.
However, I've already stated that if a person would rather not, or can't make a donation, no problem. So what's with the "Hmmm" , like here's something else we might be doing wrong. Believe me, all the warnings have been heard, duely noted, and considered. If you really hope it goes well, why not come and see a performance and help insure that our efforts go well?
Or stand out by the street door and warn us if the cops show up to bust us for putting on an English Language play, in a language school, where no money is being made, and nobody's being paid. But then I guess you could be held as an accomplice. You could always say you were just watching a play. We'll back you up!

As I have been following the show since it opened in October, I know it's a great show and a unique way to spend an evening in Chiang Mai. The writing and acting are both top notch. Well worth making the small donation. The Gate theater Group has some other great plans on the drawing board as well and they are counting on the expat community for support. The least we could do is give a look.

If you do have time to see the show, please post your impressions here.

I saw it on Saturday. The characters are very well acted and convincing as is their interaction between each other. Theatre such as this should be enjoyed and encouraged. Please support it! And remember it's only a one act-er so won't take up much of your evening. Cheers.

Can't speak for Scamps but when I first saw it I thought it would be an article about how the Dodo had been brought back from extinction by some Jurrasic Parkish method.
