    Chiang Mai's teenage curfew

There was a spate of robberies from a pair of sword-wielding teenagers last week that eventually led to their arrest.

It sparked a lot of other reports of annoying little teenaged pricks riding around on motorbikes, with the police naming at least two "gangs" that are responsible for most of the trouble they cause.

If FB translate is anywhere near accurate, it looks like they've now announced a curfew on teenagers from 10pm. Apparently they are not allowed out without a parent or guardian.

It doesn't say until what time though, the most reported robbery (for Bt50) came at 04:50am.

Sounds like the usual kneejerk response that will go away quickly enough.

Gang warfare has been going in CM for decades. I got in the middle of it at 2 AM when I was helping out a friend's son in ER from a motorcycle accident. Some teen gang member was in for a knife wound when the other gang came in to finish him off. I hid in a closet until BIB and special unit guys somehow got things in control. They have defined territories as well, like on one side or the other side of the iron bridge. Another reason to not be on the streets late at night anywhere in Thailand.

The teen gangs wont bother you at all , same as all countries , they aren't bothered about older people . They just fight amongst themselves

It isn’t true that gangs don’t bother older people. Who else would they rob?

Thailazer is right, the sword welding gangs have been around for yonks in Chiang Mai. I know of someone who was whacked in the neck by a kid on a bike with a sword 15 or more years ago. For no apparent reason.

I've been around CM at all hours for decades and I've never seen anything like this.

That's probably why it suddenly erupted all over social media and they decided to take this token step in response.

Stay safe Harry. We had a house keeper in Mae Hia district (Bann Nai Fun) that had a sons friend get offed by a gang. He was involved in a scooter club and somehow got crosswise with a local gang. Apparently he was a pretty decent kid as well. Those gangs are invisible until they aren't.

I was going home in a Grab in the small hours of this morning, and myself and the driver were chuckling over all the dicks doing illegal u-turns, coming out of one way streets the wrong way, etc. All of them pissed.

As we neared my luxury abode, we spied three police pickups, lights a-flashing.

Driver slowed down to rubberneck and let out the traditional "Orrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr".

Turns out it wasn't a drunk driver they'd collared, but two teenagers breaking curfew; apparently it started last night at 10pm.

Driver said locals are extremely happy the police have announced this.

I’ve seen some of those punks trolling around on the roads at night over the years, have yet to witness any implements. Anyway, they’re just kids out having fun, as long as they’re keeping their fun activities upon each other and weeding themselves out, then who gives a frik’n damn.

Teenagers as Young as 14 Arrested for Alleged Multiple Robberies in Chiang Mai and Lamphun

On May 16th, 2024, Bhubingrajanivej police officers and relevant agencies held a press conference on a teenager group as young as 14 years old allegedly using swords to commit robbery five times at night in the Chiang Mai and Lamphun areas.

According to the police report, Bhubingrajanivej investigative officers captured three individuals, whose names were withheld by the police as they were minors, aged between 14 to 18 years old, and seized swords and a motorbike used to commit the crimes. It was reported that the gang leader was only 18 years old.

The police stated that on May 11th, Mr. Kangchit, 20, and, Mr. Thakdanai, 20, who were victims and whose last names were withheld by the police, were allegedly robbed while skating in Mueang, Chiang Mai. Three young suspects allegedly used swords to rob the two victims.

When the victim group attempted to flee, the suspects reportedly threw a wood log at them, causing further chaos, and then cut one of the victim’s foreheads with a sword before fleeing, according to the police.

Upon further police investigation, the suspects were found to have committed other identical robberies in five other locations in Chiang Mai and an adjacent province Lamphun.

Many victims had reported the cases to the police officers in various areas including San Pa Tong District, Hang Dong District, Nong Tong District, Chang Phueak District, in Chiang Mai, and Mueang Lamphun District in Lamphun.

The police conducted an extensive investigation and gathered evidence from local CCTV to track down the suspects. As a result, three suspects were apprehended after committing the first crime on April 7th, 2024.

Initially, the suspects reportedly confessed their wrongdoings before being escorted to the crime scenes to make plans for confession according to legal processing.
