A day Trip to Samut Songkram

Decided to enjoy a nice day away from Bangkok and it's troubles without the kids. The wife and i plus a colleague and his GF chose Samut Songkram. The plan was to visit the maket in samut Songkram (Tala Rom Hoop), the afternoon market at Ampawa a nice lunch at Don Hoi Lot and lastly a boat trip visiting some temples.

First up was Talad Rom Hoop, a small market selling your average produce but with a twist.

What was the twist ?

As I said the market has a bit of a twist.....

As you can see in this pic there are train tracks running through the centre of the market

They all look very happy......................

Four times a day a train comes into the station from Bangkok and 4 times a day a train leaves the station to Bangkok.

Just as it approches the market coverings start to disappear, tables get pulled back, (some) produce gets picked up....



and the train approaches.......



and rumbles through the market.....



heading off.....



and the stalls reappear.....



About 20 minutes later....it comes back on it's return journey to Bangkok

Actually they were a very very friendly bunch, they say they don't see many foreigners and I usually have a joke with people once the shot is taken and they enjoy it. The women in pics 2 and 3 were very pleasant. We had a newspaper article with us and we saw the guy in the picture so we gave it to him.

They did say that the train is a pain in the arse though, but then don't put your market on the train tracks.

I thought for a minute there Knobsy had grown some gonads and was standing on the line taking daring action shots.....then i see he was way off.

One can live in hope.

After the excitement of jotting down the number of the train in my Spotters Guide to Trains of Asia, we headed down to don Hoi Lot for lunch.

We had lunch overlooking the mud flats where we watched the wildlife at play





There were two dogs ferreting around in the shallow water, at it for ages. There was a lot of yelping and the bigger dog had pinned the smaller dog down in the mud, actually under the water. eventually it wriggled free, but it was a bit messay afterwards....

After lunch it was back up through SS onto Ampawa Floating Market, as usual, most of the market isn't actually floating...
