I know Kanchanaburi very well, I lived there for a year about 4 years ago.

For the money you have quoted, you will get a good room. On the river near the main strip will set you back between B400-700 for air, maybe even a TV. You can get cheaper but you get what you pay for...I always stay at a place called The Taramind. A really nice guest house only a couple of years old and overlooking the river, beautiful. It's B650 a night and right in the middle of the tourist area.

    Regarding girls.

Kachanaburi until very recently never had any open bar beers with girls. The last 2 or 3 years has seen an explosion ( for want of a better word ) of bars on the main road all with girls galore. One bar in particular called *The Backpackers joint* has good staff, not the best looking but honest as the day is long. B1000 + BF.

I collapsed unconscious one night in my room with a girl from there and she didn't even take the price of a taxi, just left me on the bed.

All the bars there seem to have good people working them and as long as you're not a raging idiot, they all seem to take care of you.

It's a shame because I can only see this place getting busier in the next few years and maybe standards will drop...

Mr Willy, the key word there is OPEN. When I say open, I mean girls hanging from the door shouting: Herro, welcum. where you go?

I know where you could have gone for nookie if you wanted , but have you been recently? The difference is immense. Now it's totally in your face.

yes, that's what I am talking about also.

its not in the main part of town., about 1 or 2 clicks out... there was about 10 bars or so in a small stretch open till late.

    ask a motor taxi driver.

    they know everywhere!

OK, we are agreed. You can hump all night long in Kanchanaburi, in town or a few KM's away. I love the place and when I get old and grey, I will be there with my dancing shoes and my rubber hat and I will have a place of my own...

I know KW but closer than Pattaya!

What I was referring too most bar girls in Thailand come from the North East Isarn region.

You will find that very few local girls would ever work in a bar and as a slapper close to home!

In fact 90% of the bar girls I ask admit that they are from the North East of Thailand.

There is not much night life in Kanchanburi, but if you walk along the main drag, you will be yelled at to go into the bars for drinks. Tourism is a bit down these days. So, we were being yelled at by the older owners (usually farang) who own them, and were asking the girls to cat hollar to us. They were desperate for business.

For food, I'd recommend the Jolly Frog. I ate there five out of six nights. Cheap, and delicious Thai food with a very lengthy menu.

As for accomodations, check out Pong Phen guesthouse. They have bungalows, and a guesthouse. More importantly, they have a pool, which is well appreciated with the heat. Prices rom 120-1200 baht.

Try the Ploy Guesthouse - 700 baht a night and good value. Nice restaurant overlooking the river. Mirrors on the wall, if you get my drift ...

PB, are you genuinely semi-literate, or do you post for a bet?

I'd opt for semi-literate. If you don't like it, then don't read it. OKeydokey? Good boy, now run along and play in the traffic

Why go to Kan to work? These activities/employment are quite available amongst the great Isaan Plain and associated provinces... so I've been told.

I also am looking for good info on Kanchanaburi, and have a few stupid questions for anyone who can help.
    1. I assume you can go by aircon bus from Pattaya/Bangkok. How long is the trip.
    2. Are all the guesthouses guest (girl) friendly.
    3. Would you advise taking a companion, or are plenty available locally.
    4. Have looked at Phong Phen Guesthouse any other recommendations with a pool.

try to pop to Kanchanaburi every couple of months nice place to visit
always stay at phom phen small family run place with clean rooms at reasonable prices has nice pool to cool down in
the staff are friendly and they also serve goodfood farrang and thai menus
its next to the river and set back off the main strip
Kanchanaburi is no Pattaya but there are quite a few bars on the strip connecting the war cemetry to the bridge there are girls plying there trade in the beer bars but is more subdued here than other tourist destinations
have noticed a steady decline inthe amount of tourists the last few times i have been but that means the girls try harder to get you interested
i recently took few friends to Kanchanaburi and they said they enjoyed it more than Patts as fun could be had if desired but could also relax as the girls were less pushy and lady drink crazy
