Congrats OP, for buying an LA bike. True Thai craftsmanship at its best.

I bought one in central Thailand awhile ago and it suits me well.

I'm sure you can get a replacement economically and without too much trouble.

My neighbour bought a Toyota Pickup recently.
He took it back and complained that it was doing very little to the Litre.
They found that some clever git had drilled the tank and put a rubber plug in it.
He was helping himself on a regular basis!

My neighbour had his shoes stolen from outside his door. They climbed over the gate to get to them.
I would have thought if you needed a pair of shoes that badly, the easiest thing to do would have been to wait around the local Wat.

^ Stealing shoes is considered to be the absolute lowest of the low regarding theft, by the Thais.

^ Because Thais usually leave their shoes outside and therefore easily stolen, it is an unwritten rule that stealing shoes is not the done thing.

Unwritten rules do not turn thieves off though.

I remember stories of ppl stealing shoes from sleeping passenger on London commuter trains, apparently its hilarious seeing the office bints trying to look serene but walking barefoot on the platform.

but yeah stealing shoes is pretty low!

Yeah the Land of Smiles frowned on me last week. Changed hotels and in the bedlam of the move had the guitar in the front seat of the taxi, taxi pulls away, I'm back out the front of the hotel, now I'm thinking he's gunna stop or turn round as there's no way you'd miss it! Nah , I guess he was thinking Merry Xmas to him! unfortunatley the CCTV wasn't clear enought to make out a rego. Pr**k , And yeah response from police was "So what do you want us to do about it?"

I left some shopping in the basket, told the girl to go fetch, and as I was pointing out the bike to her a farang on the next bike looked around and whipped it...ok, got a look at his bike...next, deliberately left some shopping in the basket next to his bike and sat on the balcony to enjoy the scene till he confirmed my suspicions...couple of days later bought a half bottle whiskey, tipped out half, topped it up with a good pee, did some more shopping...you know the rest, hope he got well high.

Was that entrapment? In that case I condone it!

About 8 years ago in Pattaya someone stole a brand new Honda Wave from me. I locked it every where I went, but one time I popped into a supermarket with a security guard out front for less than 4 minutes and didn't lock it. Came out, it was gone, and the security said he had left to change a light bulb. 50,000 baht gone from a stupid mistake.

Reminds me of the time I was working on the British Steel pilot plant at Wadi Sawawin in Saudi during Ramadan in the 70's.
Top raghead of the area insisted that us expats worked as normal but no smoking, food or drink during the day so as not to upset the locals.
He even put one of his henchmen in our nice cool Portacabin office to watch us sweatin our bollocks off outside installing the power station .
We noticed that the level of the jug of cold apple juice in the office fridge was down an inch or so every day (and the handle was turned round from the way we left it- real James Bond stuff)
Suspecting that the bastard was having a swig we topped it up with Teepol.
Next day mid morning the door burst open and he staggered out being as sick as a dog.
We took him to the hospital - he was in there for a few days !!
We later heard through the grapevine that the Top raghead was trying to press charges re - poisoning one of his staff, but the poilce had trouble wording the charge !!
Never had another watchman there for the rest of the month!!!

Didn't cost me anything when I reported a bundle of cash gone missing, but then a cop asked me to do so.

What exactly would you expect them to do about a stolen bicycle or crash helmet? Bit pointless to report it, maybe they charged you for wasting their time.

actually wasn't expecting much more than that, was more interested in filing report, figured it went towards subsidising his 5 kids Xmas. But was commenting on the common thread of disinterest by police of getting involved in anything. Back home they just as bad filll out the report and it gets filled to the bottom. Quick to pin ya though when your not wearn a helmet though aren't they....

It takes seconds to cut through a padlock with bolt cutters

if you are serious about locking it then you need a proper motorcycle style lock which can't be cut easily.

Been thinking about this post for a while, as I'm considering a purchase, and learning more about the darkside of the LOS each day and now alot more weary. So when you say "motorcycle lock", I had a GSXR750 back home and have the disc lock I used for that. To lift a bigger bike into a ute is a bit of work but a two blokes on a scooter would be swift. Also with the smaller scooters take it that is nothing to snap the steering lock and merely wheel it off, so are you suggesting something more restraintive like hig tensile cable and cable locking it to something solid?? How security conscious should one be, obviously I take it the area you park also a major factor?
