    Phitsanulok boat racing

This rice farmer is building a wooden racing boat for the upcoming P-Lok boat race usually held in September.

I have never been able to attend this event, but somehow this year I will make it.
Phitsanulok Boat Race - Thailand Grand Festival

No electrical tools of any kind are used! The old man said that he was building the boat for the village and complained that none of the young people knew boat-making skills.

I don't know if the boat actually floats, but it does hold water. When he was asked how long does it take to build a boat, he replied "a long time."

Great pics! I've been to the boat races in Sawan Kholok (in Sukhothai) and seen them race the finished products.

Are those carved out of single logs?

No money, just one of those Thai 'mooban' things!

I asked the wife about this and she said 'he has to'.

Don't you think its a real shame that none of the village youngsters are helping him and learning this skill.
