    Thailand`s commerce minister dismisses `export slump` reports

    Thailand`s commerce minister dismisses `export slump` reports
    2009/02/18

BANGKOK, Feb 18 (TNA) – Thailand's Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasai on Tuesday shrugged off news reports that the country's exports in January would contract by 25 per cent, saying the ministry is in the process of monitoring January's export figures and is expected to release them late this week.

"Should exports drop considerably as it has been reported," Mrs.Pornthiwa said, "it is worrying and intolerable. However, we need to know why export have plunged."

The minister conceded that exports have been projected to decline since late last year, but no one could know just how much contraction will take place in each month of the second half of this year.

She said the ministry will try its best to locate new markets, and promote exports to lessen the shortfalls that so far seem likely in order to stave off negative export growth.

Mrs. Pornthiva said it is time for the government to set aside Bt2-3 billion of the budget to stimulate exports to ensure they would not contract this year.

In addition, the government must attempt to expand exports in both existing and new markets including ASEAN, she said

    Date today February 18th 2009.

The commerce minister really should know why by now. A five year old could know by now.

If this person has no idea why exports have dropped, why would this person be able to project that 2 or 3 billion baht be enough to solve a problem that they openly admit they nothing about.

I'm hoping that items like these are just a gross mis-translation and there really is nothing to worry about regarding the apparent stupidity of the people that run this country. Otherwise, get ready for 1997 again.

Actually our sales doubled the the last 2 months with the proceeding 6 being only 50% what they were the identical time the previous year and we presently have a problem with manufacturing capacity.

Seems that everyone here were engrossed in the political cat fight beforehand.

It is inevitable that exports are going to drop as overseas demands weaken but local demand seems to be picking up again!

^ One idea might be to give the money to exporters so that they can visit other countires with their wares to visit prospective customers who by the way have no money to spend

Perhaps its the one-off payment by the government of 2000 baht per person thats boosting the local economy?

^ It's just grand, isn't it ? The killer argument against any Thai who rambles on about the usual "Thai culture is conservative, Farang like girl bla bla" bullshit.

    Jan export down 20 pct
    18/02/2009

Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij said on Wednesday that the country's export contracted more than 20 per cent last month due to the global economic slowdown.

The minister admitted that the economy in the first quarter of 2009 may continue to sink from the previous quarter, and the Fiscal Policy Office earlier predicted that last quarter's economic growth will shrink by about three to 3.5 per cent.

He said the Ministry of Commerce will reveal January's export figures on Friday, while the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) will announce the gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate next week.

According to Mr Korn, the global economic crisis has not hit rock bottom yet, as can be seen by the low export figures in many countries. The government is trying to manage the local economy by implementing various measures to boost its growth, so Thailand would have a competitive advantage over its neighbouring countries, he said.

The minister said he hoped the 116.7-billion-baht mid-year supplementary budget for fiscal 2009 can alleviate the economy downturn.

He expressed confidence that the Bank of Thailand (BOT) can keep the baht value at an appropriate level.

The government will determine which large scale infrastructure projects the private sector can invest in and investment proportions will also be calculated, as they would affect the state budget in the future, the finance minister concluded.

Just checking their site, it appears that there's no double pricing. As one farang put it, "why should I pay farang price to get into the national park, when I can get Thai price in Patpong".

BTW, asked at Khao Yai gate the other day and was told if I showed my WP, I could get in for Thai price. Just hope the same guy is at work when I actaully try it.

Now that's outrageous. This double pricing is so unfair.

^ Not really, unlike at National Parks this actually makes sense in Poseidon. Due to our bigger tools we have a higher wear on the good girls, explaining the surcharge.

I think it's a stretch issue. I've heard the girls working with Asian, don't like to be seen with farang for this reason. Doesn't necessarily mean they don't like farang though.

Thailand's exports plunge amid global downturn
    February 19, 2009

BANGKOK (AP) - Thailand's exports posted their steepest fall in 12 years in January as demand for the country's cars, hard drives and electrical goods evaporated amid the global slump.

Exports for the month dropped 26.5 percent from a year earlier to $10.5 billion, Permanent Secretary of Commerce Ministry Siripol Yodmuangcharoen said Thursday.

The contraction in exports was the biggest since January 1997 and follows a 14.6 percent slide in December and a 20.5 percent decline in November.

Thailand's economy, the second largest in Southeast Asia, is extremely dependent on exports, which account for 65 percent of gross domestic product.

"Exports value fell in every sector," Siripol said.

For the country's three leading industries — electronics, electrical appliances and automotive_ exports fell 40.4 percent, 29.5 percent and 34.5 percent respectively, he said.

Imports fell 37.6 percent, the biggest drop since May 1998. The trade surplus in January widened to $1.38 billion from $350 million a month earlier.

Southeast Asia's second-biggest economy contracted about 3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2008 from a year earlier on a slump in exports and tourism, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said earlier this week.

The economy may also shrink in the first and second quarters of 2009 before rebounding in the second half of this year, he said.

Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij said Wednesday the government will introduce more measures to stimulate the economy. Thailand's Parliament last week approved a 116.7 billion-baht ($3.3 billion) package to stimulate domestic demand and create jobs.
