Driver injured by cement block falling from Rama 2 expressway construction

A motorist was injured when a cement block fell from the Rama 2 elevated expressway construction site onto his pickup truck.

The driver, whose identity was not disclosed, told EMTs that he was driving in the outbound lane of Rama 2 Road, towards Samut Sakhon, when a large cement block suddenly landed on the windscreen of his vehicle.

He sustained cuts under his chin and was rushed to a hospital in Samut Sakhon.

Debris falling from the elevated expressway construction site has been blamed for numerous accidents involving motorists and passengers travelling on Rama 2 Road below.

According to the Department of Highways, more than 2,500 accidents occurred on Rama 2 Road between 2018 and March 15th this year, resulting in 143 deaths and 1,441 injuries.

On March 15th, five people were killed and 22 injured when a concrete beam, from a bridge under construction near the Rama 2 Road in Chom Thong district, collapsed.

The expressway project is being undertaken by a joint venture between Italian-Thai Development Plc and Vijitphan Construction.

My wife's sister lives out there and whenever we drive out that way I spend that part of the trip looking nervously up!

After recent events, you might think that ITD would be looking more carefully at falling concrete. It isn't engineering astrophysics to sling a net under these bridges.

We may also assume that the loose pieces do also have some structural purpose so that too is weakened by bits dropping off.

wonder where all the other defective rebar went?

    no it didnt.

it fell from the old mahachai flyover underneath the construction site.

The pickup truck driver who was hit by chunks of concrete from an old flyover on Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon province succumbed to his serious injuries on Tuesday night.

Nattapong Sumanotham, People’s Party MP for Samut Sakhon, wrote on Facebook late Tuesday night that the victim’s younger brother informed him of the death.

According to media reports, the 46-year-old man identified as Amnat died at Samut Sakhon Hospital at about 9pm Tuesday after suffering a ruptured liver and bleeding in his abdomen.

Doctors tried to save the internal organs that were damaged by the impact of the falling concrete. He was transferred from Vibharam Samutsakhon Hospital.

His pickup truck was hit by two chunks of concrete measuring about 30cm wide and 50cm long on the outbound side of Rama II Road in Muang district on Tuesday morning.

Transport officials believed that the concrete chunks had fallen from the 30-year-old Mahachai-Krathumbaen flyover.

MP Nattapong said Amnat was a native of Nakhon Sawan province and lived in tambon Phan Thai Norasing in Muang district, Samut Sakhon.
