Do you dabble in stocks and shares?

I've had an eToro account for a while now, it's just got some spare cash in it because it was easy to stick money into from the sandpit, but I'm generally shit at it. I tried the "mixed bag" approach and it never really made anything. So I switched to some tech stocks and did fine until one of them took a big dive because of profit taking before an earnings reports. Took a while to come back to parity.
So I was thinking about cashing it in when I noticed nVidia had announced some new products at CES, so flippantly chucked it all in there expecting a bit of a bump.

And fucking hell, what a ride since.

It seems nVidia make the only decent data centre AI "processor" (It's actually a massive 70KG box full of tricks). It seems there is so much demand for them from the likes of Microsoft, Meta, etc. that they have to limit what each customer gets until they can expand production. Their last earnings report blew everyone's socks off.

But I'm not really a studier of form. Some see a target price of 850, others as high as 1300. (It just broke the 800 barrier after nudging it all week and now sits at 821).

So I'm thinking I might take some of the profit and see how it rides.

Any seasoned investors here got any meaningful comments?

Yes I do. It's been quite good. I have securities in AMZN, Google and Walmart. Walmart going to split 3 for 1 soon.

I have 2 very good friends who have enjoyed the NVIDIA run.

    Fun money.

BTC is about to hit its 4 year halving in April. "A Bitcoin halving cuts the rate at which new bitcoins are released into circulation in half. It occurs every 4 years."

You can see what usually happens with that.

I was relatively late and first bought at 9k, last bought 2 whole coins at 5.5k on the bounce after the Covid dive.

Fun money, stick it on BTC for the next 6-24 months.

I've already got some BTC in Coinbase, so I think I'll leave it there for now.

Dell just published earnings and shot up 30% on the back of selling AI (nVidia) servers.

I'm thinking a bit in HP and a bit in Lenovo who make the same kit - it's in really short supply.

And nVidia put $280m into an AI drug research company called Recursion Pharmaceuticals, but that might be a long term bet.

Added: I see a few pundits are calling this an "AI bubble" but I think they're missing the fundamental technological point. It's not being driving just by speculation, the earnings are proof: These nVidia slabs allow companies to replace a whole computer room of servers with just one rack. They're actually an incredible cost saver.

I think that alone is a yuuuuuuge selling point.

NVidia owns about 75% of the AI chip market. Any company fighting for space in it and has the technology would be a good bet near term. Even secondary segment companies that use it, will be a good bet and many of those shares are in a good price point range. Amazon and Google are still a good buy at ~ $175 a share IMHO. Its a longer term investment but lots of upside to be had. The win is being able to buy quite a few shares and let it ride. I look forward to Walmart's split and new share price. I may buy some more.

The S&P 500 (included in my pension fund as part of the general stock market) has been rising mightily in the last 3 months. My pension's Growth Fund (heavily oriented toward the Magnificent Seven tech stocks) has achieved results that allow me to dine at Pala regularly). Bloomberg commentators (mostly Brit or American) have told viewers in recent months to variously buy more tech, take tech profits now or hold on to tech stocks and do nothing...up to you.

Indeed. Nice place to have your IRA or other long term play money acct. . Being I am going to retire later this year ( again HaHa) I will not vest too much. I like where I have a good number of securities now.

Amazon just keeps climbing and climbing. Of course, you don't recognize anything in your pocket until you exercise the stock, but nice having it there just in case. I will probably pass on the shares to my daughters when I bite the bullet.

From 76 to 90 in five years isn't exactly pulling up trees.

Microsoft would have been a better bet.

Can't argue with that. I'd keep a few of them, there are always wars.

Reddit is about to IPO. Not sure opening price. Might be a nice little run.

Back in the tech boom period I was an avid day trader. Did some really good trades. A buddy of mine and I were up early every day before going to work placing orders and selling others. Downside was brutal taxation on the capital gains and having the IRS in my shorts all the time.

Ahhh yes Norts. Truth and reality. While some might pay less, they still die at some point.
