Thread: Price of jasmine rice soars, thanks to strong foreign demand

BANGKOK, 29th May 2018 (NNT) – The President of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, Charoen Laothamatas, said the price of jasmine rice price has recently risen to 1,250 US dollars per ton, thanks to the increased demand in the international market.

Mr. Charoen said his association is confident that the total rice exports for 2018 will exceed 10 million tons, as exports in the first five months of this year reached 4.21 million tons, up by 6.2 percent year-on-year.

Thailand ranked second in global rice exports in the first five months of this year.

India ranked first, after the country exported 4.77 million tons of rice, up by 4.6 percent from the same period last year. Vietnam ranked third with the export volume of 2.52 million tons, a rise of 16 percent year-on-year.

Took a stumble for a few years, while the rest of the specialty rice growing community [vacant of the politics] continued to step up production, putting the ever-chagrined Thais in their place.
Forever being the leading specialty rice exporter/surplus in the world.

Currently, I'm suspicious of Thai-centric attention of this nature.
Certainly, no doubt the famous Thai rice production is back in recovery mode - yet, a caveat might be placed on the levels of their current success.
