NONTHABURI, 29 October 2017 (NNT) – Thailand's export sector is receiving benefits from the increased poultry consumption in Japan, as Japanese consumers have confidence in the quality and safety of Thai chicken products.
The Commerce Minister, Apiradi Tantraporn, said the Department of International Trade Promotion has been instructed to hold marketing activities to promote the quality and safety of Thai chicken products among Japanese consumers. Japan requires import of fresh, frozen, and processed chicken meat due to insufficient domestic supply.
According to the department's office in Tokyo, Japanese people annually consume 2.1 million to 2.5 million tons of chicken meat, while Japan imports 950,000 to 1,000,000 tons of chicken meat each year. The poultry import figure in the first eight months of 2017 stood at 662,899 tons at 2.24 billion US dollars, which is a 12 percent increase year-on-year.
The export of Thai chicken meat to Japan currently enjoys the reduction of taxes from the Japan–Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement (JTEPA) agreement.
Japan is currently the number one export destination of Thai chicken products, with the revenue in the first eight months of this year at 1.03 billion US dollars. The gross export revenue of Thai poultry in the same period is at 1.82 billion US dollars, with other significant customers being the United Kingdom (U.K.), the Netherlands, and South Korea.
