Tilapia, Nile Perch, whatever- I googled it once, and this hardy fish goes by several names and has several species.

As I understand it, Pla nihn is a type of tilapia, so yes thats a definite. It grows like a proverbial weed. And Snakehead.

And apparently the "Ninh" was the locals screwed up way of saying Nile when they were first brought over. Snakehead are quite good eating too.

What about these Aussie fish you were talking about, or do the posnds have to be bigger to make it worthwhile?

Think twice before you mix the snakehead in with the Talapia. Snakehead are voracious and may eat up all the talapia. Tsicar, could confirm this but sure it is the case.

Mate I've been looking into murray cod, golden perch, jade perch etc for live export ... and using recirculating systems, nice little review of the latter from some good guys here - http://waynekerrbkk.googlepages.com/...quaculture.pdf

I knew of some guys several years ago that started a Barra farm out of Darwin and made a fortune.....then also hear of some closing in Qld....so not sure really.

I would like to do Barra here and possibly some other fish....I have a nice idea for it and would love to give it a whirl.

Keep the pic's coming...you are helping other "planners" with your very well documented, and photographed progress. We have a few rai of land in Isaan within 5km of a Tesco Lotus, and good hardware store, and a few restuarants, but still far enough "out of town" for some rural peace and quiet.
We are finalising plans for the house (to be built from re-cycled Teak), while waiting on the purchase of a surplus farm house or two by our builder friend.
We already have quite a large pond, complete with fish and water lillies, and reliable permanent water level, and the idea of a separate "Doghouse" just like yours.... with a deck out over the pond makes great sense.
I can see that as soon as we move in, we will have a never ending stream of family visitors from my wifes large family.

We selected our location as it is 40km from most of the family, making it just about far enough!....but not too far....

While I enjoy the family's company, a private space makes lots of sense! I am thinking maybe in the centre of the pond......with a "draw-bridge" might be a really good solution......

Sabang : Gr8 thread....mate of mine posted it to me in the knowledge that i am 8 10ths through the process of building a 3br 30K north of Udon Thani. The Scenario you have set it almost identical as are many of the points u have raised. unfortunatly i cannot see photos as having just joined ( dummy) i apparently have to post 10 posts before i can see ém..correct? Anyway i have storeis and photos galore if your interested...One big difference i cannot claim dummy status as i being an artichoke i designed the place myself including doing all the drawings etc myself over a four month period....this in itself lead to untold problems but the whole place has been construced off drawings in English with thai adaptations of european thinking...just to give you a flavour cost was 1.75m ...no land..land was mummies....hope you or others are interested as there is much to tell and see..will be back but got to drive 150k frm abu dhabi to dubai...don't ask !

Abu Dhabi to Dubai- thats a doddle. Cheap gas, big gas guzzler, fast road- takes no time.

Won't take you long to get up to ten posts- just post some crap. Your project sounds interesting, especially as you designed it yourself.

    ..ahh you know it then..

ploughed thru the post and there are lots of interesting anecdotes. One springs to mine is working out price per sq meter 900K = 144 sqm, 1.15m = 150 sqm and mine at 1.75m = 228 sqm. Net result you got a very good deal and Milky and my bahn were 15 baht difference per sq meter !....mind you a bit more study needs to go into this to see what the specs were !....but perhaps a good rough guide to anyone thinking of building in banoc country

Sabang: Was any consideration given in your place to the location of the buddha "room". For Ms Consistently Overspends this was the primary consideration for the whole plan...which direction to face, position of windows, positions of doors etc...for any development of the plan this had to be revisited each time..this of couse was in addition to the compulsory "house"ouside.

Jeez, there are loads of picture- can't see why you wouldn't get them.
A few more to come too.

Incidentally, I do know a big farang house outside Pattaya that has a fully kitted out Buddhist temple on the top floor. Fortunately my wife and Mil are not so devout.

Ha...well i got away with donating about 7 sqm of floor plan not a whole floor ! MIL2B was not on the scene during the design stages (or the building) as she is working in HK.....but disaster has struck on the build front as the builder has missed his extended deadline by a country mile so its back to the Lawyer on Monday for Ms Spendalotonrubbish...think well pull the plug on the builder as were still 500K to the good and finish it ourselves. Looks like i'll have to pay a visit in a couple of weeks

With regard to the photos it may be something to do with the IP as certain parts of this site ( i.e Gallery are prohibited by our erstwhile DIP ( Dubai Internet Police)...will check that out when i get to Udon Thani

...and today we pulled the plug on the contractor... Ms. Spendalot is busy moving all the unfixed materials to a secure location for fear of reprisals.....so be warned...it can go wrong !

dont bother with the lawyer, it will only cost you money, time and headaches.
if you can, get the builder to sign a contractural release and walk away from him.
good luck with the next one.

Split/Nawty...well the Lawyer is the MIL2B brother so came FOC ! ..think he was used more as a threat than anything else.... anyway the "contractor" has gone..f**k off. Unfortunately Ms Spendalot has the construction knowledge of a stunted gnat ( not blaming here btw!) so there is no way of telling whether we are up or down on the finances. I reckon about even. Of corse the excuse was that we selected materials that were too expensive and he ran out of money and therefore could not afford to put people on the job etc etc etc....but in hindsight we didn't do the propper checks on the contractor as he turned out to be more a middle man than builder..(yer probably pissing yerself laughing !!!) ....but the fact remains that was has been built is well built and ( finally !!) as designed.....whatever we pointed out was wrong was corrected and since the 2nd lowest quote was 500k more i guess its hardly surprising that he ran out of money !!! If the truth be known, now that I, like many, have lost me job in "Bling City" it looks like I can do what I wanted to do from the start and build the bloody thing for meself !!! I hear Janauary in Nong Khai ain't so bad !!!! ( With me the glass is always half full !)...anybody know of any REALLY good builders merchants around that area...and dont give me Global or Home Pro....great for lights, fridges and hong nams but crap for real building materials..waterproofing materials and the like that keeps rain/damp/1000 legs/scorpions/furryblack caterpillers/snakes/frogs out the house...ohh and ally windows and doors would be good !...anyway maybe i can see your pics Sabang when i am there !...more to come
