You get more of everything in Patters, more hiv infested old discount slappers, more trafficked Kazakhstan whores and "entertainment" women in general. lady boys galore and a "boy-zone" that when it comes to sleazy punters and depravity has no equal.

More filthy polluted beaches, scammers of all sorts, drunk ex-pat hooligans, nuevo rich rude Russians multiply by the hour etc etc.

Death on a rented motorbike literally at Your fingertips.

A "Dark Side" to be discovered at your leisure.

In short much more fun to be had.

Bangkok, but they won't go near you; you can however look at them by going to the Emporium and other such places.

Silom soi 2 and soi 4 in Bangkok's attractive 'nightlife' zone, would be a good place for you to learn the ropes, so to speak.

Saladaeng station, exit by the KFC and ask for soi 2 and soi 4; best to have a few beers at your hotel before you go, and head out about 10ish. Enjoy.

Bangkok's air pollution is horrendous and Pattaya's air quality is much better plus you get the sea breeze most days.

Pretty much same, same when it comes to cost of living and although Bangkokians will deny it you get the same human trash there as you will find in Pattaya.

I spread my time between both locations and every time I leave Bangkok I am relieved.

If all you want to do is to frequent the P4P establishments and get friendly with the local womenfolk then no contest. Get yourself to Pattaya and stay there for the duration!!

More 'establishments', more girls, more options re food and hotels, cheaper booze, discos with free entrance (unlike Bangkok) and a holiday vibe. Sea air and walks along the beaches too!

However Bangkok wins out if you want to alternate between respectability and seediness. The Shops are better and cheaper in Bangkok and there is more of an air of normality.

IMO the P4P areas of Patpong and Sukhumvit soi's 4-22 are unredeeming shiteholes of the first order. Populated by tired, ageing, worn-out working girls and tired, ageing, worn-out punters.

Acording to my trusty Goovy Map of BKK, (which I was just looking at trying to find RCA - Royal City Avenue rd) ) Soi 2 in Patpong is the poofters street
I'd hate to think new chum Davevjr got a "bum steer" from Teak Doorers!

Davevjr should spend a half a day hanging around Paragon, then a night in one of the bars in RCA, establish a standard for his pursuits.

Then have a look around soi cowboy and Nana plaza. these are pretty good to start you off. if your having a few beers that night it might be worth paying for them one at a time rather than letting the bar bill add up ( most places are okay but there are one or two that will pad the bar bill). Be polite to all you encounter, ask how much the bar fine will be for either short time or long time. If you are happy with the price go for it ( rubber up a must ). Then get yourself down to Pattaya and repeat instructions. PS don't get to pissed as trouble often follows. Have a great time and stay cool. Hope this helps.

Good advice. Stay at the Dynasty Inn on Soi 4 or something similar. A place with friendly staff and guests where you can meet people and get a sense things. Check out Nana Plaza, Patpong and Soi Cowboy. Hire a car at the Nana and head down to Pattaya and stay in South Pattaya on Soi 7 or 8 right in the thick of things.

Dave, be aware that upstairs bars in Patpong ( Silom soi 4 ) often have a surcharge/cover charge that they don't tell you about when you enter.
Ugly scenes have ensued on exit. At least this happened 18 years ago when I was there.

Most of those upstairs showbars on Patpong 2 are gone now. Of those left open on Patpong 1 the same thing applied recently as it did 18 years ago.

Mulitple Lady drinks slyly deposited on your table without warning by hostesses who then vanish into the darkness within seconds ( hefty unwanted addition to your bin) and bar/security staff presenting you with a totally different priced menu at checkbin time, which states in small print a cover charge of 300b per person.

Gone are the days when I succumb to visiting friends curiousity to frequent these establishments. After negotiating/barging past bar/security staff on 3-4 occasions I no longer bother. Their curiousity can remain.

Hope the remaining showbars go the same way as those on Patpong 2 and end up as empty shells or shop storerooms.

Like above ... both are shite man. Go to Ban Chaing, S/E of Pattaya. Much slimmer girls, cleaner bars & atmosphere. Ya need your own transport however, to get around. A rental car or Scooter will do. Many ex pats re-re-tire to BC!!

For naughty nightlife, Pattaya eclipsed Bangkok years ago. Both naughtier, and cheaper.
Restaurants are cheaper too, you can eat very well in Pattaya- but the 'fine dining' scene is still a fraction of Bangkok.
The weather in Pattaya is generally much nicer too (although this time of year they're both fine).

So if you are just looking at things through that lens, there is little reason to stay in Bangkok- but I'd still spend a few days there to check it out. Bangkok is a metropolis, with all the buzz and variety that entails, plus it has a few 'must see' things such as the Royal Palace, Wat Arun, and maybe Kho San Rd, a klong tour & Chinatown. In contrast, Pattaya is more of a one dimensional tourism/ entertainment place.
