Ideas for day/weekend trips out of Bangkok

I've recently moved to Bangkok, and would like some ideas for interesting day or weekend trips out of the city. I like interesting places that are off the beaten track and not tacky or inundated with tourists. Scenery/temples/history/modern Thai way of life, it's all good. Let's hear your suggestions...

will you be driving yourself or public transport/hired taxi?
Lots of interesting places to explore if you drive yourself.

Don't own a car and don't intend to, but have a full UK license and hiring a car is no problem. Never driven in Asia or crazy traffic like BKK but how hard can it be?

It's not hard. If you've been taught in the U.K then you should be more than capable of handling and avoiding the nutters out here. Just hang back and let them crash into each other.

If you fancy a day trip inside Bangkok, I went out for a pre-launch/test, bike ride with Follow Me Tours a couple of weeks ago. Follow Me - Bangkok Bicycle Tours - Welcome

They should be up and running in a week or two. Did you know that there is a bloody big jungle on an island just over the river from Rama 3? I'd heard about it but never been there. It's nicknamed the Green Lung (I think). Fantastic day out, I was a bit shaky at the start as I've not ridden a bike in years but my memories came back pretty quick.

Edit: Sweeeeeet, the background pic on their homepage is me!!. I knew I was the best looking there that day!

    easy!
Actually renting a car is pretty cheap here.
Driving around Kanchanaburi is nice but may be slightly too far for a day trip - better to stay overnight.

I went there for Loy Kathong last year. Best Loy Krathong I've ever had. Cheap beer and great food with loads of fireworks shows.

While it is tacky and inundated with tourists and basically a shithole, Pattaya is still a must do for all newbies even if it is the only time you set foot in the place.

You trying to put him off Thailand forever mate (Pattaya)?

Having said that a trip down around the Easten Seaboard is quite nice and even an afternoon in one of the beer bars or restaurants on Mapracharn Lake, after a trip to Nong Nuch Village or the Crocodile Farm is very pleasant.

Thanks for all the ideas, pls keep them coming!

Koh Kret is the island in Nonthaburi where they make the pottery? I went there way back in 2004 on my second ever visit to Thailand, ended up on like a day tour with a load of Thais. It is indeed a good day trip.

Klong Toey not really a good place for a day out,but good for shopping. If you do go wear shorts trousers and flip flops.
When we have a weekend away its either Bangsean,or Poipet.
    The wife likes casinos.
