Life along the klong...

Even though I live in a large neighborhood just outside of the main part of BKK, the perimeters really describe what is really the true Thai style of living. Keep in mind these shots are just a few meters away from the edge of my 'mooban'.

The big Thai school you initially see in the background is where a few of my friends teach. NickA?

If one is not one a big fat teacher's salary (cough-cough) shopping is somewhat unique.

Along the shores of this klong I noticed many Issan construction workers enjoying their Sunday off.

Many of them drink cheap Thai whiskey and catch food for next week's meal.

I have heard you live on a working klong, cool Hillbilly. I live on a manmade klong and now is the bad time of year. Its a lotus filled klong and the lotus are dead to come back oh so beautiful in 3 months. Now my klong looks like a polluted cesspool. Dang.

I have a klong running beside my house - when it flooded I was a metre deep in water I had fish and crabs on my doorstep.

Nah I got a big wall covered in broken glass on either side and not sure what is out the back as the old lady lives there and i never had a look.

Can you take a boat down the klong? How far can you travel around your khlong by canoe before you run into a dam or gate way? Do you see any giant monitor lizards in your klong?

I see the Thais with their boats traveling up and down the klong. But for how far I don't know. And yes, there are some big monitor lizards around!

I go fishing in this lake near my home. Between looking out for snakes, lizards and creepy crawlies, it is hard to relax.

This is one of a pair in the village. The water is salt here, the first time I saw it swimming I thought it was some sort of croc.

They seem to be living under one of the fisherman's houses. I am surprised that the Thai's don't eat them.

I had monitor lizard a couple of times when I lived in Malaysia last century - goes great with curry & beer, and tastes a bit like chicken as far as I can remember. Not too bad - although the muslims will not eat it, as it is considered haram.

Great Pix! yeah, you can eat them. I know several people who tried monitor lizard who said it ain't bad. I'll try it one of these days at the local jungle food restaurant. They are always fresh out of lizard. They only stock the usual cobra and such.

Hillbilly, I highy recommend that you take a boat ride down that klong. It will really give you some perspective about where your living. Just flash a fisherman a few small bills and they will take you on a tour. It will be worth it.

Hillbilly I gotta go with Ken. Find out where that thing goes if you havent. I wish I had a real klong.
