Pure marketing, they tried beer-slurrymite originally and had only a mixed response.
It actually contains celery and onion extract, the name was the result of a competition.

It appears as usual, that our somewhat demented Kiwi cousins are the cause of the "sweet" issue.
Marmite sold in Oz is produced in NZ, who add a whopping 11.5 grams of sugar per 100gm.
The original UK version has only .5gm.
Ahh Kiwis, the slapped around red headed stepchildren of the South Pacific.
Marmite is all well and good. Now, if someone were able to point me in the direction of an economically viable jar of Picalili, then that would certainly be a thing..
New Zealand Marmite is UK Marmite for poofters.

Vegemite is a natural product. marmite is fortified with B12..in other words it's put in there to make it look good. The extra energy per 100g, is as a direct result of the addition of sucrose (50% glucose-50% fructose = energy) in approximately the same ratio as in a Mars Bar. Nothing wrong with Mars Bars, but they aren't touted as a health food.Vegemite = health food. Marmite = Baby yummy sweetie shit.
The difference in energy is here nor there really when you consider how much you eat.
Thinly spread over a couple of slices of toast for breakfast is about it.
Although a spoonful of vegemite goes down well in something cooked.

Apparently Vegemite was originally going to be called Pawill, to counter marmite.
