Well, if you enjoyed them back in the day, you will like this too. Whiny lyrics delivered on top of some fiendishly cleverly crafted dirt with occasional outbursts of feedback-drenched melodious cascades from J. Mascis guitar. This is the original lineup, together for the first time in something like... 12-15 years? Ye can google it.
Think of going to the rubbish dump and finding a really great, but slightly rusty power tool, a semi-functioning iPod you might be able to fix when you have some time to spare, and a rubbish collector with an original and interesting story to tell. Well done, now back to the review.
It's the oldest cliche, but with his guitar lines Mascis says everything that his lyrics and voice never manage to convey, and so beautifully too. His playing has sped up a bit too since I last heard him, and it adds an extra nice touch to the solo lines.
This album has echoes of Neil Young, Sonic Youth, and even though Mascis might smack my face for saying so, Slash's best moments. Throw in some Bob in the Mould too.
