Composed by lead singer Paul Weller, and released in 1984. Great beat !!!....lyrics are mighty impressive in their simplicity...the theme in Paul Weller's songs from this period is Anti- Thatcherism.

Great song about a tragic historical event of 1845–1850... written by singer-songwriter Pete St. John in the mid 1970s......The Fields of Athenry is about a fictional man named Michael from near Athenry in County Galway who has been sentenced to transportation to Botany Bay, Australia, for stealing food for his starving family. It is a widely known and popular anthem for Irish Rugby and football supporters.

I joined a genealogical website recently and discovered that I have a couple of convicts in the family way back around 1800. Irish and Scottish.....convicted for stealing trivial things. This was a bit of a shock to me, as I had no idea there were any convicts in the family.
I also have aristocracy on both sides.:irish: But again a bit of a shock to find more English than I had thought, or hoped for. Always thought they (now "we" ) were an odd lot.
...especially since this is a music thread.
