His technical skills are pretty average as any live performance will reveal. Still, if he composes his solos himself I think he deserves credit for that part. Some of them are very catchy.
He has also confessed to not being able to play chords. Maybe he should've stuck to playing the bass or the violin.

I was watching a live video with Steve Stevens supporting Billy Idol and I like his style particularly when he had his acoustic guitar in his hands.

This debate is somewhat useless unless you have had the opportunity to sit with each an every guitarist mentioned, in a living room, with the exact same instrument in their hand playing the identical piece of music....then you can rightly compare.

You may be shocked to find that the best musicians on this planet are basking on the streets of New Orleans or the Underground of London for example.

    ^ Magical
I listened to a JB album this morning. Live in Tokyo 2009, features this track; also have a double album from March this year at Madison Square Garden, JB solo, Clapton solo, then together last 4 tracks.
    Old masters!

^ I also am a big fan of Jeff Beck but are we really listening to him play with sounds or his guitar.

Is playing an acoustic guitar and making it sound impressive far more difficult then playing an electric fender with a tremelo arm plugged into a mass of distorton units?

Honestly, there's some utter shite written on this forum but this must take the biscuit.

Hendrix was a consummate musician having learned his trade on the circuit for years before he morphed into the persona most now know him by, a career midwifed by Chas Chandler.

The man was a genius and took the medium into an entirely new direction, something which will ensure his rightful place in posterity.

Anyways, in the beginning there was Robert Johnson.

    Amen.

Many accomplished guitarists since then have been journeymen refining their skills into unique styles, carving niches and earning reputations accordingly but in truth they could not be regarded as geniuses. I rather think most would probably freely admit to being essentially derivative and leave it at that.

Hendrix took it to another place and like all great achievers his talent was such that he made it all look so casual and simple.

May, Satriani, Vai, Page, the OP's chap, Clapton and others of their ilk are at heart technicians in comparison to Hendrix.

Hendrix was quite simply the best. The gig at the Isle of Wight was a bad day. The man was out of sorts and who knows maybe full of prescience, weighed down by the rubbish accumulating in his life which was nearing its end.

Anyone is going to favour the players of the music they prefer to listen to making any list far too subjective, so no list can be the 'definitive' list of all time....There are many great players who are not well enough known to get the recognition they deserve. Personally I disagree with most of the lists so far. Many will disagree with mine.
    Pat Metheny
    Jeff Beck
    Jorma Kaukonen
    Peter Green
    SRV
    Adrien Belew
    Rory Gallagher
    Duanne Allman
    Frank Zappa
    Carlos Santana
    Dave Gilmour
    Yamandu Costa (check out youtube)
    Bruce Cockburn
    Steve Hackett
    Mark Knopler
    Leslie West
    Pete Haycock
    Ry Cooder
    Overrated.....
    Jimmy Page
    Angus Young
    Slash
    Kurt Cobain

[quote, Loy Toy.. Is playing an Acoustic guitar and making it sound impressive far more difficult?..

    YES..

This Youtube one of Tommy Emmanuel says it all... Acoustic guitar, If an artist can sound good on one,, they are good.

Phil & Tommy lived (near me) at Guanaba, just behind the Gold Coast, Australia.
In the mid/late 80's they had a band, ''KaKadu, the best kind of country''
They often, very often, played at our local pub (Coomera river hotel) on a friday night.
A couple of genuine people, and great artists
They do guitar duets that will amaze,.. see you tube for more.
    Cheers

Tom Morello, if anyone can post up his version of 'The Ballad of Tom Joad' then he is one of the best ever solo guitarists without a doubt.
He does many guest appearences with Bruce Springsteen so if you love guitar solos then this guy is up there with the best.
