    Headphones & Speakers...

Loads of us like music, so I thought it might be good to share our experiences on headphones and/or speakers. I brought some headphones recently, on the spur of the moment at the airport, and it would have been good to have some other folks' experience and suggestions.

    I bought these Shure 215

They come in a little case with some earpad/bud options (about 6 different pairs):

I got them at Swampy which quite an expensive place, about 3 thousand and something, I think they're usually about 60 squids ($100), but you can get them cheaper if you look around.

I initially didn't like the way they fitted in my ear, and didn't really use them on the plane. But, now I've got used to how they fit in, and they're fine... The sound is good, you can certainly notice a step up from mobile phone speakers, etc. I was just lucky really, tried a few out (the shop guys didn't like that much...), and kinda knew that the brand mostly made strong earphones.

But, they are not really blowing me away, they are not that comfortable for me little ears either. Good, maybe very good, but not great, imho.

I got them because me previous earphones are about 3 years old and have had a hard life, sometimes the ends feel a bit loose, especially at the socket end, so probably just time to let them die gracefully:

Denon c260, I paid about 1500 baht for them, but you can buy them for under 20 squids, so they are quite a cheap headphone. They were good for the money, tried out loads of pairs between 1000 and 3000 baht, and they played music through my music player better than others I tried at the time. Comparing with the Shure buds I just got, the Shure's are noticeably better, but for free dodgy downloads on me laptop, not much... For something like a well recorded (AAD) Peter Gabriel or something, it's quite noticeable. I think the Denons are very good value for money.

I got this last year to carry around with me and play at home (wherever home may be...):

It was the only NFC enabled small speaker available in Muscat when I was looking, and it wasn't cheap. They cost about 170 squids, so over $200.

It is nice and portable, well made, etc. The sound is good. But, I reckon there are many better speakers around now for less money... I wouldn't buy one again. In fact, I think the whole Beats brand is massively overpriced for good, but not great, gear...

Years ago, back in the UK, I had a nice stereo system, and my speakers were my favourite part. They weren't actually that expensive, about 450 squids, but they were the dogs dangly bits...

If I ever settle down again and buy some decent speakers, I'd be after a pair of EPOS speakers.

Anyways, how about you fellas and ladies? Do you wear big red Beats Audio headphones; I bet some of you do...

What headphones & speakers have you got, and how do you rate them???

    ^bloody Nora, that's impressive!

How much were they (if you don't mind me asking), and how would you rate them.

Just looked them up, get very good reviews too - bet they sound bloody brilliant with all those Cliff Richard CDs...

I think i paid about £400 but that was over 10 years ago,you need to get the Q500 now there about £700.
I put some plugs in the rear bass port, find they sound a lot better that way.
Good all round speaker nice mid and high end sound perfect for Max Bygraves, and Gerts best of Issan cd.
Also worth a listen is http://www.mordaunt-short.com/.
Its a Korean site Betty i pasted a link to,so find your nearest store and don't forget your best test cd.

my livingroom 2:1 surround system. I have heard these blasting 18 floors below, when i popped to the shop one night i also bust my laptop because i rested it on that woofer while having a shave. 5000 baht they cost

I bought this at one of those stalls near Nana soi 7/1. a proper bargain at 400 baht. i whack a memory stick in it and take it in to the bathroom and blast out some Otis Redding. My main use for it is for my surface pro in the bedroom because the volumes too low on it. has a nice neon light on the bottom and a radio.i ve had it ove a year now

These can go underwater swimming and are great on the bike and in the gym with no wires hanging

That's a quality bit of gear; 30 years... Wharfedale have always had a good name. What would you replace or upgrade them with, or is that a no no?

Great stuff. Similar price to the EPOS - they had great soundstaging and control. If anything, the ES11s were a tad light in base if the source wasn't well driven.

Ten years and going strong, so that's 40 squids per year for great sound - gotta be worth it.

Spendor BC1's bought new in London when I was doing the usual pilgrimage to London thing back in the 70's. Unfortunately still at the ex's place, a situation which I am hoping to remedy next month.

and a pair of Stax Electrostatic Headphones, also bought new in the 70's for a small fortune, $169. I have seen them on ebay recently for $5000, I don't think anyone bought them. I'm not sure if mine are the same as in the picture, but they look mighty similiar. They are also at the ex's and I hope to rescue them too.

Hmmm, never been 100% convinced by those, but a relative spend 5,000+ squids on an expensive system (Meridian?) and when he watched films, the helicopters flying over, and the gun fire across the room, was impressive...

Convenient, but how's the sound quality?

This is a sound quality thread, Dil! You seem to prefer convenience and price...

    Quality gear, Palexxx.

I'm under the impression that speakers like yours and my EPOS ES11s were so good, the technology so relatively simple but correct, that it's difficult to improve upon them.

As for those headphones, do you feel like a producer listening in a recording studio when you have them on???

Speakers - I have a pair of Nohr 9.0s, which are (were) cobbled together by an American guy in Thailand - I'm not sure if he's still in business or not, but they are still decent speakers. The cases are carved out of a chunk of marble.

The only problem with them is that they are quite long so take up a lot of floor space, well that and and the kids also like to sit on them and pretend they are riding horses so they've destroyed the front grills.

Headphones - being until very recently a frequently airborne sheep I have some Bose QC15s, which I think are great.

I was using Monster Lil' Jamz earphone things on my ancient iPod for quite a while, which i really liked and were a vast improvement on the stock Apple headphones, but after two or three years they began to fall apart and I now seem to have lost them. They were about US$ 90 in the States.

I did for a short while use the earphones that came with the iPhone 5 which were OK, but my wife clearly also rated them and so claimed them as hers. I didn't care for them enough to enter into a discussion about it.

I replaced the Lil' Jamz / iPhone ones with some Klipsch things, S3s I think, which are OK. Actually they're rubbish but they were cheap enough I suppose (about US$ 35?).

Apologies for the stock photos, nearly all my worldly goods are currently packed up and hopefully clearing Delhi customs (for export... ).

I say nearly all - the Bose headphones are here with me in Thailand, as is my iPod dock which is a Logitec thing and belts out a decent sound for what it is:

Dil, I'm not sure your truck would do the trick.

Having just returned to the delights of rural Isaan life, the one thing I'd forgotten was the amazing capacity the locals have for absorbing noise. I reckon our local fruit 'n' veg man tools around the village in something like this to flog his mangoes:

How do you test your massive sounds?

The great big shit shattering blow the fucking neighbours off the wall until their ears bleed?

Ask your next doors, by text, to blow the fucking neighbours off the wall until their ears bleed?

If they have no response, stamp your feet to this.....

These seem to be nice, probably quite similar to my Shure215s. You'll be needing to get rid of the iDevices...

One of my friends had these, at over 1000 pounds for the top models (wooden) they were expensive. Very nice sound, although I didn't particularly rate them over my EPOS ES11s...

Replace.... would be like shooting your dog in the face. Listened to teenage kicks on vinyl aged 15 through them and still have all the disks from the 80s. Them speakers cannot be sold or retired.

They have never required any maintenance and get a pounding every day for several hours as they are the sound system for my movie/tv system.

Will be sad if the do give up the ghost one day.

I hate to break the bad news, but they ain't gonna last another 30 years! But, don't worry because here's your replacements, Looper:

There aren’t many audio companies that have been around long enough to celebrate 80 years in the business. But Wharfedale has – and it’s marked that impressive milestone with the Denton standmounters.

These speakers are deliberately retro in feel thanks to a vintage-look mahogany veneer, recessed front baffle and tungsten-coloured grille. But take a look at the engineering and there’s a more cutting-edge flavour.

Wharfedale Denton review from the experts at whathifi.com
