Best for me is Tom Waits. And I'll wave a flag for some great Canadian songwriters,
Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Gord Downie, Neil Peart, Bruce Cockburn, Gordon Lightfoot.
Lots of writers I appreciate as poets but not so crazy about their music. Other favourites include Dave cousins and Al Stewart

Neil Sedaka collaborated with many people and wrote some absolutely fantastic lyrics and musical scores.

Yes, Paul Anka wrote some great songs including one of my favourites My Way.


Paul Albert Anka, OC (born July 30, 1941, Ottawa) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and actor.

Anka became famous in the late 1950s and 1960s with hit songs like "Diana", "Lonely Boy", and "Put Your Head on My Shoulder". He went on to write such well-known music as the theme for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and one of Tom Jones's biggest hits, "She's a Lady", and the English lyrics for Frank Sinatra's signature song, "My Way" (originally French song "Comme d'habitude").

In 1983, he co-wrote with Michael Jackson the song "I Never Heard", which was retitled and released in 2009 under the name "This Is It".[1] An additional song that Jackson co-wrote with Anka from this 1983 session, "Love Never Felt So Good", has since been discovered, and will be released in the near future. The song was also released by Johnny Mathis in 1984. Anka became a naturalized US citizen in 1990.

Surprised Bob Dylan has not been mentioned, or did I miss it...

I wonder how many of you have heard of this guy, who recently died at 91. Technically speaking, he was a lyricist- so half of a songwriting team. You certainly can't fail to have heard of many of his songs, phew-

Most were written in collaboration with his better know partner, Burt Bacharach.

He headlined at my senior prom and really sucked. Of course I was drunk out of my mind on sloe gin and coke and passed out for most of it.

Two blokes who wrote lyrics and music that represents an era are John Phillips and John Sebastian for Mamas and the Pappas and Loving Spoonful respectively.

What great memories these masterpieces brings back for me.
