50 years of the Rolling Stones

Yep it really is that long since the Stones did their first gig in July '62..

As part of their celebrations BBC radio asked listeners to rate their favorite Stones tunes and here's the results, can't argue with the number one as it's what I would have chosen, but I'm very surprised to not see 'Emotional Rescue' anywhere in the top 50. One of the best tunes from the Jagger led period, I can only assume people couldn't remember the name of the track, or Keith banned it's inclusion.

    • 1 Gimme Shelter (1969)

2 Sympathy for the Devil (1968)

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

They will go down in history as one of the worlds best bands.

There song list and longevity is incredible. Unbeatable really.

The Beatles where up there but most of those dudes are long gone.

A great band but they fell apart musically after Mike Taylor left the band.

If anything their legendary status has been diminished because of their longevity and the crap they produced after the mid 70's.

100% agreed. As much as I love their music The Strolling Bones really should have retired gracefully years ago.

The prices they charge for their tickets, especially in poorer countries is a fucking joke too considering they don't even need the coin.

    Spot on!
They should have knocked it on the head after 15 years, The Stones have hardly produced anything noteworthy from the 80's on.

It's not exactly a secret that Jagger is in it for the $$$.

Being the consummate extrovert that he is, I think Jagger is more concerned about falling out of the spotlight than making more money. Sure he looks like a monkeys ballbag now, but he'll never give up center stage for a life of seclusion.

The only way bands make money now is from concerts and merchandising. All the music is filched from the internet.
Going to a 'Stones concert now though is more like a corporate freebie "event" (like a Man U game ) than a rock concert.

I remember many years ago taping one of those Radio 2 live Stones concerts on I think some kinda metallic ? TDK cassette and it came out brilliantly , it began with the long intro drumming from Not fade away ,,,,, unfortunately it did many years later when the tape broke

I doubt its too much about their greed I would think its more to do with the take of the sponsors

Keith Richards has dodged the grim reaper for so many years, i saw him 20 yrs. ago looking like he was about to croak and last week i saw him looking better than ever with a cigarette.
Him and Bradley Wiggins - 2 super humans.

Neo, the top 50 you posted never had ' Time waits for No-One'.
Oh, another superb song of theirs., but i guess there are so many more that have been omitted.

What they wrote in a short space of time (about 6 years) changed the music industry and the Stones, along with the other British bands emerging at the same time were beneficiary's of the Beatles global success.

Then again they had George Martin and his visionary musical arrangement talents complemented John Lennon's musical genius.
