    A Trip to Phrae

Thetyim, one of only 3 white faced residents of Phrae was supposed to be coming to Chiangmai, but owing to old age and a buggered back he was unable to make it... so if the mountain won't go to Mohammed.

Phrae is located around 225 kilometres south eadt of Chiang mai and takes around 3 hours by motorcycle. The roads are pretty good all the way, though the first leg of the trip to Lamphang is a bit dull.
After Lampang however you hit rolling countryside and paddy fields and the last 70 or so kilometers takes you through some glorious countryside.
Also along for the ride were pirate's cove and his wife.

The town of Phrae is actually quite bigger and more civilised than i would have expected but Thetyim leads a strange lifestyle in the jungle some 10 kilometers outside of the town itself.

These are some pics of the lovely landscape som 5 kilometers out of Phrae on the way to Thetyim's ramshackle wooden hut in the jungle.

Thetyim lives right in the middle of that jungle over there.
the damage done by the flooding in may is still clearly visible.

Thetyim, could you please pm me the names of the restaurants and the hotel.
    I've forgotten them already.

This is a pic of the broken bridge at the bottom of Thetyim's land that still hasn't been fixed so you can't walk over to the village opposite to buy cigarettes.
In fact, to buy cigarettes you need to ride about 6 kilometres.

Did you get any pics of the kids that Thetyim pays 20 baht to for them to beat my highscores in the arcade?

In the morning Thetyim took me pretty high up the mountain to the local viewpoint.
These are the short set of stairs leading upo to a little temple where a solitary monk lives with his little dog.

This is the central section of the very small temple at the top of the mountain.

The views from up here are fantastic in all directions.
This is the view of Phrae town which is set in a wide flat valley, surrounded by mountains.
    Apologies for poor picture quality.

    some more nice views.

Apparently large wild bears still live in the jungle over there.
The monk told us that a while back there were tigers living there too but they have been hunted to extinction.

I didn't see any bears but I did manage to see my first ever eagle.

I'm quite sure he likes it that way.

    I think he does.
I bet he craves a little foreign company occasionally.
I must say that for a jungle dwelling savage, Thetyim is a great host.

I wonder if Thetyim was aware that his gracious invitation of CMN would lead to the demise and westernization of his beloved little paradise.

And that is precisely why I keep quiet about my little corner of paradise.
