High IQ link to being vegetarian

Vegetarianism has been linked to better heart health
Intelligent children are more likely to become vegetarians later in life, a study says.

A Southampton University team found those who were vegetarian by 30 had recorded five IQ points more on average at the age of 10.

Researchers said it could explain why people with higher IQ were healthier as a vegetarian diet was linked to lower heart disease and obesity rates.

The study of 8,179 was reported in the British Medical Journal.

Twenty years after the IQ tests were carried out in 1970, 366 of the participants said they were vegetarian - although more than 100 reported eating either fish or chicken.

Men who were vegetarian had an IQ score of 106, compared with 101 for non-vegetarians; while female vegetarians averaged 104, compared with 99 for non-vegetarians.

There was no difference in IQ score between strict vegetarians and those who said they were vegetarian but who reported eating fish or chicken.

Researchers said the findings were partly related to better education and higher occupational social class, but it remained statistically significant after adjusting for these factors.

Vegetarians were more likely to be female, to be of higher occupational social class and to have higher academic or vocational qualifications than non-vegetarians.

However, these differences were not reflected in their annual income, which was similar to that of non-vegetarians.

Lead researcher Catharine Gale said: "The finding that children with greater intelligence are more likely to report being vegetarian as adults, together with the evidence on the potential benefits of a vegetarian diet on heart health, may help to explain why higher IQ in childhood or adolescence is linked with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease in adult life."

    Intelligence

However, she added the link may be merely an example of many other lifestyle preferences that might be expected to vary with intelligence, such as choice of newspaper, but which may or may not have implications for health.

Liz O'Neill, of the Vegetarian Society, said: "We've always known that vegetarianism is an intelligent, compassionate choice benefiting animals, people and the environment.

"Now we've got the scientific evidence to prove it. Maybe that explains why many meat-reducers are keen to call themselves vegetarians when even they must know that vegetarians don't eat chicken, turkey or fish."

But Dr Frankie Phillips, of the British Dietetic Association, said: "It is like the chicken and the egg. Do people become vegetarian because they have a very high IQ or is it just that they tend to be more aware of health issues?"

Nothing wrong with quality protein from insects and tadpoles, or lean, organic meat from free-range chickens and dogs.

The odd bit of pork rip or raw spiced beef won't turn you into a moron, either.

    Relax!

Well, you would expect vegetarians to have a healthier life. The very fact of them being vegetarian means that they are concerned about their health. I haven't met very many vegetarians who smoke and drink to excess; it is probably that more than the vegetarianism which makes them healthy.

I do hope that they live long lives, there have to be some compensations for denying yourself pleasures and leading booooring lives.

That's a bit of a misconception, vegetarian food can be very sophisticated and delicious, with a wide variety of flavours, it's not about denying pleasures.

    Incisor teeth.

    All humans have them.

    We are omnivores.

Fact: We do eat too much meat.

Humans should eat less meat and more vegetable based proteins.

Vegeterianism is a lifestyle choice that for some is quasi religious in nature.

No, I am not talking about the food.

I have yet to meet a vegetarian though, who was much fun.

I have met a few who were so obsessed with the health thing, that they were complete bores.

... don't forget that vegetarians not only make themself suffer. They also make other people suffer when they demand special food, etc.

A good vegetarian is one that:
    1) Eats vegetables at home and normal food when going out
    2) Doesn't talk about the benefits of being vegetarian
    3) Doesn't wear clothes made of hamp

Just what is supposed to be wrong with hemp?

It's top notch as far as sustainable clothing goes, you can roll it up an smoke it, apparently, or chop it up and brew some mean tea, with the added benefit of recycling some of the minerals and nutrients you've discarded through your skin earlier.

Sustainable clothing... is that really necessary in LOS? My clothes get recycled no matter what. Sooner or later most of the village have used my old clothes instead of buying new stuff themselves.

My impression of vegetarians by choice is that they are germphobic weirdos. They insist that everything must be organic, sterilized, and homogonized. That is not natural and there is no joy in eating like that.

I formed a really bad impression of a vegetarians based on the behavior of a few English girls in Thailand. They refused to eat the pat pak ruam mit because the guy used oyster sauce. They were upset and wanted their money back because they couldn't eat such "unhealthy" food. Here these brats are, fortunate enough to be able to travel to a foriegn country, and they are turning their noses up at the host country's cuisine because it doesn't conform to some PETA animals over people bullshit philosophy. How arrogant and rude is that?

I do eat meat and killing a chicken myself did not turn me into a stupid vegan freak. Instead, it taught me to be more consciousentious when I cook food and not to settle for low quality.

    The test was done improperly.
