What 'system' are you talking about? The evidence nailed him dead-to-rights, and Peru has no death penalty (or even a life-sentence), but does have a leniency rule where a confession will knock time off your sentence- he's trying to save what he can of his ass as he knows he'd be found guilty if a trial were held (due to the facts we were all privy to), thereby increasing his punishment.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

if that is, in fact, peruvian law......what's your point?

probably a good decision on his part.

but i'd have to think he'll still be in jail for many years. and judging by the posts by our resident experts on peruvian prisons, they won't be easy years.

My point is that the 'system' (which you claim did its job) didn't have anything to do with his confession.

the cops gathered evidence.....captured a suspect...interviewed the suspect ...the suspect confessed.

    the system worked.

he (hopefully) wasn't tortured....and nary a heart was eaten.

Ah yes- the same system that many of us examined and used to come to our conclusions, but were wrong to assume his guilt based on the evidence that was over-whelming to the point where it brought about his confession (but, hey, at least we got to enjoy your smarmy condescension)?

I also hope a confession wasn't beaten out of him- I wouldn't mind hearing that the girl's father and brother got a few minutes alone with him afterward, though.

I don't quite understand your argument with Ray . . . what we were working off before was journalism. The system that has him behind bars and with a confession is the law.

Either way, he is in jail and it looks like he will be there for a very long time.

I don't like being censured for having an opinion (if you disagree with my opinion that's fine, but don't tell me I'm wrong for having come to a conclusion just because you haven't come to one- the justice system owes the presumption of innocence- I'm not part of the justice system)- I do understand his point and agree it has validity, but I don't appreciate the way he presents himself on this forum (and you're welcome to disagree with that as well).

I also don't agree re: your journalism point- the facts of the case were presented via the mass media, but most of us weren't basing our conclusions on journalistic opinions but rather the actual evidence provided by the Peruvian police.

Thanks. I have never had a problem with Ray, nor his presentation on this forum. He rubs people up the wrong way at times, but he doesn't spout rubbish. As far as I am concerned he is one of the more fact-based posters here.

The journalism came first, then the pronouncement by the police that they were fact.

Anyway, hopefully case closed . . . if he gets the 35 years he will be +/-60 by the time he gets out . . . and though I have no personal nor anecdotal experience with Peruvian jails, nor any jails really, I am guessing that he will not enjoy himself as much as Bernie Madoff is in his country club

^Hi Hat. I very rarely disagree with you, but will have to do so on one point. I find RC to be the most offensive poster in the forum. You say he rubs some people the wrong way. I would say it is many more than some from the recent comments I have seen. Anyway, neither here nor there as I now have him on ignore, the only poster on my ignore list, and thus it is no longer an issue. Regarding Van der Sloot, if he has in fact confessed, he may well get less than the maximum of 35 years, but even if he gets twenty plus, that is a very, very long time in a Peruvian prison which, by many accounts, are among the world's worst. It will be interesting to see if he confesses to the Aruba killing, although I doubt he will unless there is something in it for him. Anyway, case closed (although I am certain Fox News will milk it for a few more months).

Read his smarmy (that's my 'word of the day' today it seems...) replies on this thread.

    His quotes:

you guys seem pretty confident, so i assume you have some evidence. when will you be getting in touch with the prosecutor's office?

i have no idea if this guy is guilty or not....but i do know that the only reason anyone cares about him is because foxnews made a big deal out of a blonde woman being killed.

to these posters (and others who can't keep their powder dry), i would suggest that they take a deep breath and wait for the judicial system to run its course.

And you're one of his favorites- I can't think for myself, apparently:

We have different tolerances for condescension, I guess.

I came to my conclusions once the police released the videotape and time lines (along with some other evidence) as did most others.

I agree, he has nothing to gain from it . . . and by the time he gets out of Peru wouldn't the statute of limitations have run out, not on the murder of the American girl for which he has not been found guilty, but for the more recent charge regarding the 25k and 15k?

^^I doubt very much that the extortion charges in the US will come into play. He has not been convicted of them, and would only be extradited after completing his Peruvian sentence, if the charges were even still valid at that point in time. Facing twenty or so years in a Peruvian hellhole, if tried and convicted, he will have ample time to reflect on his life, for however long it may last.

I read that he tried to extort 250K from the Holloway family to disclose the location of her body, and they actually paid him 15K- what a piece of work this kid is...

Don't worry. The fam will pay some prisoners to ensure that Joran wishes he was in an Aruba jail. Never mind that Peruvian jails are even worse than Thailand's without the added aggro he is sure to receive.

^Hi Hat. Google is a great resource. Look up World's Worst Prisons. A Peruvian maximum security prison is Number One. TB, HIV, brutal guards, incredible overcrowding, untrained guards, freezing weather for the ones at high altitudes, etc, etc. Watch the TV show Prison Break. Probably pretty close. Doesn't sound very welcoming.

Probably the only number one Peru has . . . I'm not saying that they are not miserable, though I could imagine jails in Nigeria or Uganda to be pretty miserable as well.

And . . . to be honest . . . I'd rather not try any of them , even the Aussie, Euro or US 'holiday' resorts.

I still can't believe that people actually thought Urine On Da Slut was innocent of either crime. I knew he was guilty of the Natalie murder right away when he played the old 'blame the nearest black guy game'.

I just saw a vid showing Peruvians throwing spoiled lettuce at him as they brought him into a new jail. I hope he has to do time with the other losers they have.

Report: Van der Sloot retracts murder confession

AMSTERDAM – A Dutch newspaper that interviewed Joran van der Sloot in his prison cell in Lima, Peru, said Monday he has retracted his confession to the killing of a young woman there.

De Telegraaf said the 22-year-old Dutchman claims he only signed papers admitting killing Stephany Flores because he was intimidated by police and had been promised he would be transferred to the Netherlands if he confessed.

"I was very scared and confused during the interrogations and wanted to get away," the paper quoted him as saying. "In my blind panic, I signed everything, but didn't even know what it said."

Mum Confronts Teen's 'Killer' In Peru Jail

The mother of a US student who disappeared on holiday in Aruba has confronted the teenager's suspected killer in a Peruvian Jail, according to his lawyer.

Police officers escort van der Sloot in Peru

Beth Twitty entered Castro Castro prison with Dutch journalists who bribed prison staff to let her see 23-year-old Joran van der Sloot, lawyer Maximo Altez said.
Van der Sloot, also Dutch, is being held at the maximum security facility over the killing of another young woman.
The lawyer said: "Yes, the lady spoke to him for a minute. Some Dutch journalists took her, bribed prison employees, entered and tried to talk to Joran."
Van der Sloot did not respond but instead gave Ms Twitty his lawyer's business card, Mr Altez said.

Van der Sloot has been charged with murdering 21-year-old Stephany Flores in a Lima hotel in May, after being arrested in Chile and turned over to Peruvian authorities.
But he is also a suspect in the case of Ms Twitty's daughter Natalee Holloway, who was 19 when she disappeared on a high school graduation trip to Aruba in 2005.
The teenager was last seen in a car with van der Sloot.
In June, a US grand jury charged him with fraud and extortion.
It is alleged he solicited $250,000 from Ms Twitty by promising he would reveal the location of her daughter's missing remains on the Caribbean island.
He was arrested three times by Aruban authorities, but released each time due to lack of evidence.

Halloways mother is an annoying bitch. Vander Sloot is nothing but a stupid wigger, he's getting what he derserves. If you read between the lines he wouldn't have been able to kill the girl in Peru if it wasn't for the FBI. He was supposedly dead broke at the time, so that gave the FBI a chance to entrap him with the extortion thing. He took that money and flew to a casino in Peru to play in a poker tournament, but lost the money in cash games before the tournmanet started. No FBI entrapment money, no murder... He shouldn't have been listening to Gordon Gekko, greed is not always good.
