Atheists are believers who hate God, says Anglican Archbishop Peter Jensen

RELIGIOUS leaders have used their Easter sermons and messages to condemn the rise of atheism, with Sydney Anglican Archbishop Peter Jensen describing the philosophy as an "assault on God".

A day after Sydney Catholic Archbishop Cardinal George Pell criticised non-believers, Dr Jensen said in his Good Friday sermon at Sydney's St Andrew's Cathedral that atheism was a form idolatry.

"As we can see by the sheer passion and virulence of the atheist - they seem to hate the Christian God - we are not dealing here with cool philosophy up against faith without a brain," Dr Jensen told worshippers.

"Atheism is every bit of a religious commitment as Christianity itself.

"It represents the latest version of the human assault on God, born out of resentment that we do not in fact rule the world and that God calls on us to submit our lives to him.

"It is a form of idolatry in which we worship ourselves."

Cardinal Pell of St Mary's Cathedral delivered a similar attack on atheism in his Easter message yesterday. He praised government organisations "paid for by the Christian majority" for helping make the Australian way of life the envy of the world, but noted that atheists sponsored no community services.

The new Catholic Bishop of Parramatta, in Sydney's west, Anthony Fisher, continued the attack in his Easter message.

"Last century we tried godlessness on a grand scale and the effects were devastating: Nazism, Stalinism, Pol Pot-ery, mass murder, abortion and broken relationships - all promoted by state-imposed atheism," he said.

He kinda has a point, some atheists can be just as single-minded in their beliefs as Christians tend to be.

Doubt his words will gain much traction though. And this:
"Last century we tried godlessness on a grand scale and the effects were devastating: Nazism, Stalinism, Pol Pot-ery, mass murder, abortion and broken relationships - all promoted by state-imposed atheism," he said.
is a load of complete and utter balls. The good Archbishop might want to brush up on his history, the violence, ignorance, impediment to progress and devastating effcts that religion has had.

these are the ravings of lunatics and brainwashed automatons.

as people begin to think for themselves, see religion for the medieval mumbo jumbo that it is, and leave the church in droves, these madmen are reduced to coming up with ever more extreme statements to justify their cause and keep their jobs and stipends.

christian charity organisations do admirable work, but then so do many charities not aligned to religions.

Cant beat a bit of religion.

Man who may or may have not existed gets nailed to a bit of wood, I get to eat loads of chocolate and get paid extra for working if I want.

Hallelujah to man nailed on a bit of wood weekend!

The Catholic church is facing an enormous crisis of its own making and these guys use Easter messages to cry about atheism?

I like how he included broken relationships in his list of atrocities, obviously getting dumped is a result of state imposed atheism and comparable to the horrors of Nazism.

"To state we hate his god or are attacking his god is nonsense.

"How does one hate or attack that which does not exist?"

How nasty to attack people who happen not to believe in your God.

How soon before nutters like this Cardinal Pell dipshit start advocating nailing non believers up on a cross? Better he gets back to touching up the choir boys instead of attacking others who dont share his religious superstitions.

^Long history of that, them loving, caring religions.

Hate god. What a crock. Hate the religious? I wouldn't bother to waste emotion and time on a bunch, even a large bunch, of idiotic wankers.

That's a pretty f*king weird thing to say there Panda.

If the clown in question is spending his time decrying atheism instead of diddling children that would be a good thing.

It does seem a little ironic that a bunch of kiddy fiddlers are now trying to cast those who dont owe blind allegiance to them in a bad light.

Fuck em,-- leave our kids alone!

Atheism is the lack of belief in gods. Some atheists may carry it further to an active belief that there are no gods. It's a fine point in language but a large difference in philosophy.

The religions are getting worried that their snake oil isn't selling anymore. They should have redeveloped their product a long time ago. There is only so long that someone can sell shit before the customers figure out that it smells.

The only difference between saints and sinners is that every saint has a past while every sinner has a future.

Yep. And just as political as well. Such Atheists identities could easily be indentified as indoctrination.

For Christ's sake, yet another religious loon, with an excess of dopamine, attacking those who don't share his near schizophrenic delusions.

I don't "believe". I've never believed. Such a loaded word is preposterous. I use scientific, provable, repeatable, factual evidence to understand the world and universe around me. It is also known as reality. I don't believe in Atheism, as there's nothing to "believe" in. No doctrine, no ghost stories, no book written by a group of men, altered severely over the centuries, from people that mostly didn't even witness the events they detail.

As has been said above, I suspect this is a misdirection tactic, used at a time when the catholic leadership is under a severe, sustained and justified assault.

Further evidence, as if any were needed, that religious leaders are a bunch of disingenuous, hypocritical, dysfunctional, ignorant retards, too scared of the real world and responsibility (some of which are also the reasons they engage in pedophillia).
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

Atheism means to be without a belief in God or gods. It isn't a denial of any particular god, but rather the realization that there are many beliefs about this subject and to affirm or deny something we must first define what we are talking about. We atheists are a minority in the U.S. and we must be concerned about Christianity since they are the majority. I couldn't give two shits about
Christianity, but we must remember these guys have the numbers and with numbers you have power. Next thing you know we could find ourselves being burned at the stake for our lack of commitment to their dogma.
