I was with you until this. (Oh and the CW/CCW flow of water down the bath hole....it's why southern and northern hemispheres do it oppositely (using the same design hole).)

Magnets are going to be magnets. Compasses will still work, just point the opposite way, steroe speakers will still work because their magnets act regardless of where North is, and maglev trains electromagnets will not be affected in the slightest.

Yes, you are correct. I was only giving a connection between GPS and magnetic North. The 5 year updates to the magnetic model are sufficient anyway for magnetic information. Navigation is done using True North anyway.

I have a vague recollection from my childhood of a surveyor showing my Dad how to calculate True North from Magnetic North. I'd assume the calculation is still valid despite the several hundred KM's difference between then and now, and that there is a data sheet or table that needs updating now and then.

^ Apologies, I lost the 'quote' I was replying to this morning. I checked and the 5-year update Magnetic model I was referring to was supposed to have been published yesterday. However, the US shutdown has delayed it until the end of the month.

So it's updated every 5 years? With Mag N moving 55 km per year, wouldn't that make navigation, especially closer to the Pole, very innacurate very quickly after each update?

Sorry Maanaam - Not quite, the Coriolis effect just ain't that strong.

    https://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/mysteries/coriolis.html

One can find both counterclockwise and clockwise flowing drains in both hemispheres. Some people would like you to believe that the Coriolis force affects the flow of water down the drain in sinks, bathtubs, or toilet bowls. Don’t believe them! The Coriolis force is simply too weak to affect such small bodies of water.

But, really, the posts are both comedic and satirical - remember the ridiculous y2k hubbub?, the magnetic field shifts are in the same vain.

Polar navigation requires special training. Many aircraft do not have the necessary equipment to fly over the poles and are limited to +/- 75 latitude. Polar grid navigation is used at higher latitudes. I'm not sure about the IN systems on modern aircraft but the older ones wold gymbal lock as they went over the pole,.

Interesting. I shall no longer perpetuate that myth! Thanks.

What about the Hapgood/Einstein crustal displacement theory?

    Well,

Hapgood’s “Earth Crust Displacement” hypothesis could be on the mark – time will tell. Although it never passed peer review and his ideas were not accepted as valid hypothesis’ doesn’t mean they’re to be trashed or discounted.

Obviously we cannot do a “review” of the information he presented, that would take many months. As part of his material the earth axis shift theory is an interesting hypothesis. Would make for a quite a mess but won’t kill us all off.

Although, I would expect that if the earth was actually shifting on its axis our current day scientists would be out there hollering loud and long.

So, what do you do to protect you and yours?

My moneys still riding on eradication by a super-virus.
