    Obama commutes Chelsea Manning sentence

President Barack Obama has commuted Chelsea Manning's sentence for leaking documents to Wikileaks in 2010.

The 29-year-old transgender US Army private, born Bradley Manning, will be freed on 17 May instead of her scheduled 2045 release.

She was sentenced to 35 years in 2013 for her role in leaking diplomatic cables to the anti-secrecy group.

The leak was one of the largest breaches of classified material in US history.

The White House had suggested in recent days it was open to commuting Manning's sentence.

She twice attempted suicide last year at the male military prison where she is being held at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Manning also went on a hunger strike last year, which ended after the military agreed to provide her with gender dysphoria treatment.

In one of his final acts as president, Mr Obama granted commutation of sentences to 209 individuals and pardons to 64 others.

Among those pardoned on Tuesday were retired General James Cartwright, who was convicted of making false statements during an investigation into disclosure of classified information.

Cartwright was questioned by the FBI in 2012 over a New York Times reporter's expose on a malicious computer program known as Stuxnet that was designed to disrupt Iran's nuclear programme.

The US Army charged Manning with 22 counts relating to the unauthorised possession and distribution of more than 700,000 secret diplomatic and military documents and video.

Included in those files was video footage of an Apache helicopter killing 12 civilians in Baghdad in 2007.

Manning also passed on sensitive messages between US diplomats, intelligence assessments of Guantanamo detainees being held without trial and military records from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The disclosures were considered an embarrassment to the US, prompting the Obama administration to crack down on government leaks.

At a sentencing hearing, Manning apologised for "hurting the US" and said she had mistakenly thought she could "change the world for the better".

This would have been a different story if old Binton was in power. Obama doing the right thing for once. He deserves another Nobel Prize!

This is a very confused young man. He's already twice attempted suicide. My guess is he'll be in the obituary column soon enough.

^Wearing makeup, a wig, and flouncing about in a frock does not make a male a female. It just makes him strange.

I rather think America has just redeemed itself somewhat, a tiny bit I grant you, but in its eternal battle against a fucking cretinous judicial system I feel they have just won a small victory.

    Well done Obama.

I fail to see why a transgender would want to join the military and be surrounded males. I thought Katoeys longed for the company of females?

C'mon, Prag, you know there's nothing quite like the close camaraderie of young fit men bunking up together in close proximity, disporting themselves, half naked, in the barracks with those glistening, rippling, sinewy muscles intertwining their way into that luscious, dewy, secret apex of promise made lubricious by fresh sweat and the slitheriness of old anal juices.

The sergeant's mess was always reckoned to be best, eh what?

To me they are whistle blowers not traitors. If you want to talk about traitors I think Trump is more fitting.

^^ & ^: One was a member of the US military, the other worked in classified USG facilities. Both swore an oath to protect classified information to which they had access in the course of their jobs. Both knowingly violated that trust. In my book, that makes them traitors.

In Dragonfly I am not surprised. In Snub, I am.

^ Well there are plenty of ex-military who agree with me. With regards to Snowden he exposed NSA overstepping that in my eye violates the constitution.

^No need to explain your support of traitors to me, Snub. You are entitled to support people who betray their country and their oath as you wish. I just had you pegged wrong, that's all. Carry on.

Some of my high school buddies that are career military are very disappointed in 'her' pardon.

They state that he put lives at risk.

I've forgotten the details of his leaks over time.

He had to do it because Trump would have pardoned Manning anyway, no big hearted Obama here, just Obama the opportunist.

I really fail to see your point re Trump. This is a thread about a convicted traitor and his pardon. Trump has nothing to do with the subject, other than to allow you to derail the thread to pursue your own political agenda.
