The Guardian is reporting 7.4 which is very strong and that waves have already hit the east coast. No actual detail.

Fortunately later reports have downgraded the force, however on top of the tragic losses it'll discourage investors and holidaymakers.Having survived a few tremors it's a truly terrifyinng invisble threat.

A fire , an explosion you can see and run away

Good luck to the Kiwis a great people in a beautiful country.

May be rebuild will have to be to higher standards or certain locations abandoned

Whilst I am sure he is replete with knowledge on both the local lie of the land and seismological analysis, i'm sure that if you look on the web for even five minutes, there are other news sources other than Ant, and Thai forums.

It's been upgraded again to 7.8 - centred around the small town of Kaikoura on the east coast of the South Island. I know it well - used to dive there regularly. Town has been evacuated - reportedly one building collapsed. No fatalities known at the moment.

And I didn't want to say it, but on FB folks in NZ were alive and writing about the fact that the electric was out and they where shook up.
So FB is still working in NZ.

When an earthquake hits South America or Asia especially U.K. Charities immediately have the begging bowl out for donations, yet you never see any assistance being offered to New Zealand.

    My update from rockin' NZ

The 60 minutes from 12.02am featured quakes as follows (excluding small ones)

    7.5, 4, 5.6, 5.1, 4.2, 4.2, 5.6, 5.4, 4.4, 5.2, 6.2, 5.5, 5.5, 5.5, 5.6, 3.4, 4.2, 4.6, 4.7, 4.8, 4.0, 4.6, 3.2, 6.2, 4.9, 4.0, 4.8

And continued all night. One as I write this sentence

    Just checked, it was 5.1

Can update from GeoNet GeoNet - Quakes

Am in house built on reclaimed land by Wellington airport (some of this area was uplift in 1855 quake, 'red zone' marginally above sea level, and many moved to higher areas overnight.

Emailed friend at 1.46 this morn, "They're easing off, 15 moderate/strong, just 2 severe last 30 minutes according to GeoNet. Calm maybe." not to be have had 7hrs constant quakes. House owner has windchimes in kitchen, the earthquake alert, no need last night as books abandoned their shelves etc.

Hope that's the worst of it over. Just two fatalities as I understand it, overseas news reports i read make it sound far worse

Quitened down a bit now, after shocks centred off Kaikoura ranging from 2.6 M < 4.5 M, fairly normal magnitudes and frequencies, every few minutes, for NZ.

    Geonet NZ updates here;

    GeoNet - Quakes

    Peaked at 7.8M

    Simple answers to that puzzle;

NZ's underpopulated compared to S.American west coast uplift EQ prone regions and Asian/European land masses

NZ towns and communities aren't built on mountainsides.

    Major NZ EQ's involving deaths.
    1929 Murchison......15 dead
    1931 Napier............256 dead
    2011 Christchurch...185 dead
    2016 Kaikoura.........2 dead.

Got an Email from a friend in Christchurch who says they are safe with no damage to their property.

There is a lot of damage elsewhere, good coverage here:

Yeah, I'm in Dorkland/Auckland... my apartment is adjacent to sky city tower.. my place sways with the wind, get/feel almost daily tremors here..

I had a conversation with a couple of insurance assessors and geologists I met in Queenstown NZ in late 2011. They were touring Otago, Southland and Canterbury inspecting quake affected areas and properties to see what was further insurable against EQs or not.

Their opinion then was that Christchurch was (and is) and never will be insurable due to the geology of the district.

Most of the Ch-church EQ damaged buildings were built on reclaimed swampland, and Ch-church cathedral floor and the city centre is around 2-3 metres above sea level, while some land north and east of the city is just over high tide mark.

Twenty five years ago the geology dept. of Dunedin University warned Ch-church city council and developers that the place was unstable and likely to sink as the ground beneath most of the city would basically turn to jelly in a prolonged high magnitude EQ phase as was experienced in 2011.

The insurance and geologists reports made in late 2011-2012 were again ignored by the crooked civic leaders and business investors that infest Ch-church.

Developers went ahead and started building hundreds of single storied buildings to house demolition and building crews as they went about trying to make a fast buck for their investor masters who are also trying to reclaim land at Port Lyttleton, dumping what was old Ch-ch as rubble landfill there,...for free.

Now more EQ damage, and Fk all of it properly insured, and none of the new stuff of any real use other than as shelter for the transient construction crews , some infrastructure and service maintainers/workers, a large unemployed population of mainly older folk and a supply system for the rural economy, which has dwindled to SFA over the years.

Abandoning Ch-ch and Port Lyttleton for the more EQ proof Port Chalmers of Dunedin, Otago was a regarded as a no-no for rival Canterbury, but some smart investors plumped for developing Dunedin as a major port city, it's deepening sea channel and large sheltered harbour already berthing and servicing several cruise ships a year. All the ports mentioned have good rail and road links to the rest of NZ.

Timaru is also badly affected by EQ's and needs constant dredging as does Lyttleton,

The Port Lyttleton recovery plan was voted for in 2015, but progress has been slow, this latest EQ causing all involved to think again.

Akaroa, on the peninsula east of Ch-ch is a far better port location, than Lyttleton, cruise ships dock there and it has a deep natural harbour and almost EQ proof, built on an extinct basalt volcano, as Otago harbour is,...solid rock, not mud and gravel which is Christchurch's bed-rock.

Christchurch however will forever continue to sink, like it or not.

A good case for abandoning the dump.
