Russia jets observed 'all safety measures' in US warship flyby
Moscow (AFP) - Russian aircraft that flew within metres of a US warship in international waters of the Baltic Sea was observing all required safety measures, the defence ministry said Thursday, expressing astonishment at the "sore reaction" from Washington.
Washington on Wednesday criticised the manoeuvre -- which was dramatically caught on camera -- with US military command slamming it as "unsafe and unprofessional."
Su-24 planes were conducting test flights in the area and "having observed the ship, turned away in observance of all safety measures," the defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said in a statement posted on the ministry's Facebook page.
"Frankly speaking, we don't understand such a sore reaction from our US colleagues," the statement added.
"With the US Navy destroyer in operational proximity of the Russian navy's Baltic fleet base, the principle of its free sea navigation does not negate the principle of free air navigation of Russian planes," it said.
The US military's European command said one flyby -- one of several -- consisted of a "simulated attack profile" and came within 30 feet (nine metres) of the ship USS Donald Cook.
"These actions have the potential to unnecessarily escalate tensions between countries and could result in a miscalculation," it said.
A senior US defence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: "This is more aggressive than anything we've seen in some time."
Russia's Baltic fleet, including the navy's aircraft, this week is holding drills observed by the head of its Western military district commander, the military said Wednesday.
Ties between Russia and the West have plunged to their lowest point since the Cold War over Moscow's annexation of the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 and its support for separatist rebels in the east of the country.

They were unarmed Russian fighter jets, according to the CNN article. I'm not sure how that would lead to escalated tensions.

Do they not still have the exemption on money made overseas if you stay out of the US for 330 out of 365 days? It was $95,000.00 a year when I was working in Saudi.
The US are clearly not used to the standard rules of play in waters around Europe. I have heard of worse, much worse, than I saw in the video posted.
depends exactly where the ship was,Originally Posted by kingwilly

This sort of thing has been going on since the cold war by both sides. Nothing news worthy here.
What would the reaction have been if a Russian warship had been in the Gulf of Mexico, in international waters, with a Cuban helicopter on board just to even things up, close to where a US fleet was holding drills ?
The western press gets these stories from the US who do their best to vilify.
There are no details of just where the US ship was, like how close or far it was from Russian territorial waters
We now know that the US (spy ?) ship was close to where the Russians were holding drills. Could it be that the fly pasts were a deliberate "Piss off your getting to close"
Of course it was and the US does the same when Russians get "to close". Western media making an issue of it. Russian media not as far as I can see.Originally Posted by birding
Exactly. The ship was 100km off of Kalingrad. I wonder what the news stories would have been if it had been a Russian or Chinese ship 100km off of the coast of Miami? There would have been outrage if the merkins did not do fly overs, and probably a call to bomb the ship from the flag waving "dem ruskies" brigade.

Very uninteresting post. Do you have any links to that statement. This is of course the "World news" thread which has, I believe a rule, no links no post. Or is it just another example of your verbal diarrhoea which adds zero to anyone's knowledge by an unexceptional sheep. But hey, what's new about that.Originally Posted by Looper

Maverick used to do it at every opportunity. Young sailors and airmen of both sides like a bit of excitement and show off their toys in a no lethal way. Watch the videos on RT, Ameristani sailors smiling at the event. Only grumbles from the Ameristan vassal NATO.Originally Posted by Troy

I wonder how the reporters were made aware that the airplanes were unarmed. Did they accept the pilots word? Or were their own systems disabled, similar to the alleged incident a year or two ago in the Black sea, and therefore unable to respond aggressively?
Allegedly a Russian helicopter also joined in with a ballet around the destroyer. The pilot of the polish helicopter, on the destroyer's deck, was allegedly unable to obtain permission from NATO headquarters to join and create a multinational dance troupe. it seems that would destroy the image of the Russian bear in the eyes of the sheeple.
It seems the Ameristani did respond with leathal force. Unfortunately the string holding the cricket ball wasn't nong enough to reach the SU24.

Yes, thank you. A link back to your original statement, very useful.Originally Posted by Looper

Or I have probably missed an earth shattering statement.
