Manchester Dogs' Home fire: Donations reach £1m in a day

BBC News - Manchester Dogs' Home fire: Donations reach £1m in a day

More than 150 dogs were rescued from the fire, which broke out at Manchester Dogs' Home in Moss Brook Road in Harpurhey on Thursday evening.

Staff said they were "overwhelmed" at the support they had received, with hundreds of people donating food and blankets for the surviving animals.

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

A JustGiving account set up by the Manchester Evening News had raised more than £1m just after 19:00 BST.

    Jesus wept.

There's a mountain in Iraq called Mount Sinjar where Yazidi refugees fleeing Islamic State are starving.

Pity they didn't have any starving dogs with them.

I don't see what that has to do with it.

Britain is sending milllions in aid to Iraq out of the taxpayers pocket.

It's up to them to do what they want with the rest.

Im sure that fellow muslims from around the world, including the oil rich states, delved deep into their pockets to aid their poor brothers and sisters trapped on the mountain.

    As always, Allah knows best.

All this money was donated from local people through social networking.
    An amazing feat.
The English care more about dogs than sand eaters.

This is about dogs home being torched.

Its not just the fault of the kid who burnt it, but the 1000s of people who are so fucking dumb that they geta dog with no idea of the care required, hence them being in there in the first place.

Rubbish. You should be proud to be English, a people who still have compassion as a cornerstone of its culture and social fabric.
The money collected is a pittance in comparison to the billions which have been collected on behalf of the refugee and aid industry.
Keep in mind that the very same people opening their hearts and wallets here are also the same people who give generously to other charities and who volunteer.
You may be ashamed, but have you given to the refugee charities, or volunteered your time? The donors have a right to decide where their discretionary spending is directed. Some would rather reap the joy of helping an animal in need and the kind loving workers at the dog's home than to spend it on drugs, alcohol or a hooker in Pattaya.
Kindness is spaying and neutering one's companion animals.

And collecting wads of donated cash will change this mentality cycle.

Naturally, the larger picture is being missed.

    Well, the small amount of money collected will help change things for the better. I don't know if anyone took the time to read the Mission Statement of this historic charity that started in 1898, but here are some highlights;

    - To encourage, facilitate and promote the benefits of responsible dog ownership
    - To provide education and training in dog ownership, handling and behaviour, and the benefits of dog ownership.
    - To campaign or make representations in relation to dog welfare and the benefits of dog ownership.
    - To provide neutering and other veterinary treatment for dogs in our care, and to provide assisted neutering for dogs belonging to the public
     

They are dealing with the bigger picture.
All I can say is, bless the employees, volunteers and donors of the Manchester and Cheshire Dog's Home. It represents the inherent good in humankind and exemplifies the compassion and kindness that make England a nation superior to those who are incapable of working together and of showing compassion for those creatures in need of care.
