Suicide Kills More Americans Than Car Crashes

Suicide Now Kills More Americans Than Car Crashes

By Megan Gannon, News Editor | LiveScience.com

Suicide has surpassed car accidents as the No. 1 cause of injury-related death in the United States, according to new research.

From 2000 to 2009, the death rate for suicide ticked up 15 percent while it decreased 25 percent for car wrecks, the study found. Improved traffic safety measures might be responsible for the decline in car-crash deaths. As such, the researchers said similar attention and resources are needed to prevent suicide and other injury-related mortality.

Death by unintentional poisoning, which includes drug overdoses, came in third behind car wrecks and suicide after increasing 128 percent from 2000 to 2009. The data from 2010 would push that rise in death rate even higher, to 136 percent, study researcher Ian Rockett told LiveScience in an email. Prescription painkiller overdoses might be to blame for this drastic rise. Recent research has shown that in some states painkiller overdoses may be responsible for mor deaths than suicide or car crashes.

"While I am going well beyond our data, my speculation is that the immediate driving force is prescription opioid overdoses," said Rockett, who is a professor at West Virginia University's School of Public Health. "There is much to be done in terms of both research and prevention."

The new study, published in the November 2012 issue of the American Journal of Public Health, also found that unintentional falls and homicide were the fourth and fifth causes of injury death, respectively. And overall, injury-related deaths were less common in females than males.

The research was based on data from the National Center for Health Statistics.

    i am wondernig one thing...

when one goes to the doc, is a bit down, all a bit too much, no nerves anymore... the doc gives them anti-depressant with a likelyhood of 0.99.

and this psycho-stuff causes at the end of the day more madness and craze, than everything else (ever could)...

they should make a map (of the world) with the anti-dep prescriptions and the suicide to figure out any correlations...

What about the guy who crashes his car, scuttling a goat while under the influence of drugs?

    fatal road traffic accidents
    http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verkehr...Cr_Deutschland

the statistics shows fatal road traffic accidents of

    germany, netherlands, austria, switzerland, USA

each country cut the fatal accidents to 30 % (comparing the figures from 1980 with 2006) - except for one country: the US&A, which had cut it only to 65 %...

the number of fatal road traffic accidents in the US is MUCH higher than in the above european countries, known for speeders and reckless driving...

and thats very surprising, as you are driving VERY VERY VERY VERY slow...
how can this be explained ?

because you get the driving license for peanuts?
while we in europe pay a few thousand euro for it - and get training?

    Was that a sarcastic comment?

The Swiss have easy access to guns...since they keep them after their compulsory military service...and around a quarter of suicides are by gun.

Interesting to note where you think the "Western World" Starts....

Read a book called "The geography of Blyss" by Eric Weiner a while back. Wasn't just about suicide but what countries are the happiest and why. Very good read. Just thought I'd mention it.

japan and korea - faik - have very stressful and demanding work environments...

the other countries in the tops, like russia, lithuania etc. have in recent years undergone major changes affecting the peoples lives heavily... so, imo, one could understand (more), that there is "reason" to commit suicide...

while switzerland is - from the european viewpoint - pretty much the country where milk and honey flows...

they are earning very well, and its (compared) a clean, healthy country, with very good retirement and health care solutions...

if asked (or if possible, they do), most germans (and other europeans) would want to move and live in switzerland...

i find it highly surprising, that they are that far ahead of the rest of europe...

somewhere i read the most preferred method is plunging into death, followed by poisoning... shooting is increasing but not the most used way...

Completely pointless chart without the heading.

"Suicides per 100,000 people per year"

its not explainable - with switzerland - not with the "usual" psychological stuff...

they have a very good education...
they have secure jobs, more secure isnt possible really...
they have healthcare can go to psychologist and whatever else...
they really have "it all" (compared to others)...

there is a very stabile, well established social environment - and one would expect LESS suicides in such an environment....

their analysis says, its more in the cities than in rural areas (probably same as in other countries...)

and it also said, that already above average numbers of children have depressions...
though, imo - their schools, parents and job prospects are really alright... nothing "wrong" with the people there...

this high suicidal rate can imo only be explained with what is most likely the "true reasons" of very most suicides anyway... something in the environment, something physical what triggers a depression, a physical condition, which was "artificially" declared a "psychological" condition - and treated completly wrong...

its just not explainable with the usual "culprits" in switzerlands...
jmho.. depression is an environmental condition.... as the other psychiatric conditions as well...

something wrong - maybe its the "fluoride" or a similar stupid thing...

There is the Happy Planet Index already:

Happy Planet Index - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

...and for 2012 Costa Rica tops the list:

The data | Happy Planet Index

Then there is the Forbes "Happy List" that puts Norway on top:

    01 Norway - Christopher Helman - Forbes

Not sure what this has to do with suicide killing more Americans than cars though....

Has nothing to do with autos being safer.

It has everything to do with the economy. People who dont work , drive allot less. There has been no jobs recovery in the us since 09. Food stamps and handouts at at all time highs . All equals less cars on the road

you mean, the US has finally managed to cut down their road accident figures by increasing unemployment?

which then leads to higher suicide rate than fatal road traffic accident?
    clever move...

where is the comparison of increase of anti-derpressants and increase of suicide rate...
its the increase of psycho-medication in the US... causing your high number of road accidents AND suicides... BOTH numbers are high...

Suicide rates are very hard to compare nation to nation. Each legal system works differently. In one country a death by overdose may be rule accidental in another suicde. The old saying about a guy killed in a subway, was he pushed, fell or jumped. Inquests will often return an open finding if there is no hard proof either way.
Maybe the Swiss are more open about suicide and thus rule cause of death suicide, while other nations for religious and social conditioning, require a bigger burden of proof that the death was not in fact accidental.
Many single car accidents could be ruled as suicide. Jim
