Fixing from Indian subcontinent poses threat to 2012 Games, says Minister

(Reuters) - The integrity of the London 2012 Olympics could be shattered by the "enormous" threat of illegal gambling rings trying to fix results, Britain's Olympics minister said on Sunday.

Event fixing could play "a very real part" at the Olympics, Hugh Robertson said, adding that he was trying to convince other governments to take the threat seriously to avoid a scandal which could scar the reputation of the Games.

"We know that there are enormous illegal betting syndicates in both the Indian subcontinent and across the far east," Robertson told Sky News.

"We know that pressure is very often exerted on athletes and indeed athletes' families. We know it's out there.

"It's very difficult in cultures where they don't admit that gambling takes place, so it all happens behind closed doors, in back rooms and so on and so forth, it all happens illegally. It's very, very difficult to police that."

Illegal betting and event fixing have not been detected at previous Olympics, according to authorities, but Robertson's ramping up of the rhetoric reflects a concern that not enough is being done across the world to clamp down on the activity.

A joint intelligence unit, comprising the International Olympic Committee, Britain's Gambling Commission watchdog and the police, will operate during the 2012 Games, drawing on information from betting firms, national Olympic committees and Interpol.

The IOC, which has banned athletes and their entourages from placing any bets during the Games, has issued advice to athletes and officials and will set up an email hotline for reporting suspicious activity.

The IOC used betting early warning systems during the Beijing 2008 and the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and neither Games showed anything suspicious.

But IOC president Jacques Rogge has said there is a danger gambling rings will penetrate the Games in the future.

Robertson said he was confident that sufficient action had been taken to minimise the threat in Europe, through information sharing and co-operation between organised crime agencies, police, gambling bodies and sports organisations.

"It's not really an expensive thing, it's more about setting a good example and convincing others that this is a threat that needs to be taken seriously," he said.

UK police launch special unit to protect London Olympics from Indian betting syndicates

London, Jan 2 : The UK police will set up a special unit to crack down on betting syndicates, particularly in the Indian sub-continent and in the Far East, planning to influence the outcome of this year’s London Olympics.

Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson said games fixing has now overtaken doping as the biggest threat to the reputation of the London games.

“You cannot underestimate the threat this poses because the moment that spectators start to feel that what they are seeing is not a true contest, that is when spectators stop turning up and the whole thing turns to pieces,” The Daily Mail quoted Robertson, as saying.

“At some stage over the next two or three years, we will have some other sort of betting scandal in some sport. I just hope it''s not at the Olympics,” he added.

Robertson said betting authorities in the West were ‘well set up’ to spot illegal betting activities, and also criticised regulation in the Far East and Indian sub-continent.

“If you look at the most high-profile incident - the Pakistani cricketers [caught spot fixing] at Lord''s, the issue is not of betting syndicates in this part of the world - it is illegal betting syndicates in the Indian sub-continent and elsewhere, where huge sums of money change hands,” he said.

According to the paper, the special unit will be headed by the Metropolitan Police and will work with the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) and Interpol to track suspicious gambling activity abroad. (ANI)

Iran has officially voiced its objection to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over the logo of the 2012 London Olympics, condemning it as “racist.”

In an official letter to the IOC signed by Secretary General of the National Iranian Olympic Committee Bahram Afsharzadeh as well as its Director Mohammad Aliabadi, Iran complained that the logo is “racist” as it features the word "Zion."

"A high-velocity missile system may be situated on the roof" and 10 soldiers stationed in the building for two months for the Games, which start on July 27, according to a leaflet distributed to residents.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed on Saturday it was scouting locations as Britain prepares to mount its biggest peacetime security operation for the Olympics.

"Ground-based air defence systems could be deployed as part of a multi-layered air security plan for the Olympics, including fast jets and helicopters," a spokesman for the ministry said in a statement.

"Based on military advice, we have identified a number of sites and... are talking to local authorities and relevant landowners to help minimise the impact of any temporary deployments," he said.

The ministry has made no final decision on deployment of missiles, but is evaluating sites alongside police, the statement added.

Brian Whelan, a journalist and resident of the apartment block in Bow, east London, told AFP: "They're going to do a dummy run and if it goes well, there will be high-velocity missiles stationed on my building, along with soldiers.

"It seems like it's completely written in stone -- there's been no consultation. They announced it in a way that makes it seem like some kind of prize that I've won, to be living on an army base, which is insulting."

The building was chosen because of its "excellent view of the surrounding area and the entire sky above the Olympic Park", the leaflet said.

It assured residents that the missiles would only be used in the event of "specific orders from the highest levels of government in response to a confirmed and extreme security threat".

"Having a 24/7 armed forces and police presence will improve your local security and will not make you a target for terrorists," it said.

A security force of more than 40,000, backed by a huge intelligence operation, will guard venues, athletes and the millions of visitors expected to throng the British capital for the Games.

"Lone wolf" terrorist attacks are a major concern for security forces but a range of other threats are also being considered.

In 2005, a day after London was named host city, four homegrown suicide bombers attacked three underground trains and a bus, killing 52 people.

He's got a point though, the UK population has been so excluded from the 'peoples games' from employment, to regional development, to ticket allocation, that any mention of the Olympics has become synonymous with government self interest and corporate arse fucking.

It will come, it will go, it will have very little effect on the average citizen, unless they are having missiles on their rooftop, and only if you live in a very small and decidedly unappealing part of Great Britain called Hackney.

Maybe I've been away too long, but having the Olympics in the UK means nothing more to me than a spectacular waste of public money and the opportunity for a few more illegal immigrants, masquerading as "tourists", to slip in the country and bump up the benefit bill and the crime rate.
