don't know if this is true or not, but it all seems reasonable to me.

Yes you can. They just can't get one for certain countries. For instance in Thailand you can get one from:

    The Police Clearance Service Center
located at Building 24, Royal Thai Police Headquarters,
    Rama I, Pathumwan, Bangkok 10330
    Phone numbers: 0-2205-2168-9 Fax: 0-2205-2169
    E-mail: pcsc[at]police.go.th

For the Uk you go here for one Home Page

They can also advise on how to obtain equivalent information from the overseas authorities here Overseas

Has to be quite a major crime to get black listed, also the Thais don't seem to understand that many countries don't make their people have an id number, so makes it difficult to blacklist someone.

Once that 2 months is finished, I repeat the whole process. No need to show any proof of funds whatsoever.
    Never heard of that before.

So you can just go to immigration with your marriage certificate and some other documents and they give you 60 days extension on a 15 day stamp. What are the exact documents you take with you, besides passport and marriage certificate? And how much do they charge you?
    Passport (Obviously)
    Marriage cert
Wife's ID (She doesn't have to be with me)
Documentation showing (In this case a rental agreement) proving that my wife is resident in Bangkok.

Cost is the same as any other extension (1,900 baht).
OK, slight update as I actually did this today. That's me sorted for another 60 days.

Just a slight difference as they now insist that your wife/child is with you, so I had to drag my misses out of work. Something to do with them having too many problems with 'dodgy' marriages such as people who only agreed to marry for money or divorced/estranged people still wanting the extension for their now obsolete certificate.

    Everything else was the same.

OK cheers for the update. So that was just your passport, wedding certificate, couple of photos, B1,900 her ID card and something showing where she lives?

    Yeppers.

The document must show that she lives in Bangkok though (or whichever office you are getting it done at). Oh, plus signed copies of everything, of course.

    5 now, I think.

I must do another 15 day stamp trip to the border after each 60 day extension runs out, they tell me that there is no limit to the number of times that I can do this (yet)

It seems the Thais are not alone.

The message is fewer and fewer foreigners are interested in being hassled by stupid Thai gotcha rules. Clearly evident in the sparse high season and the glut of foreign owned properties on the market as expats prepare to exit.
