Is this a scorpion?

Is this a scorpion and if so is it dangerous as i kicked it off my foot this morning. I've never seen one like this before?

Whip scorpions are arachnids, but despite their name they're not poisonous, though they spray fairly concentrated acetic acid when disturbed. Because acetic acid is the main ingredient of vinegar, this has given them their common name "vinegaroons".

I always thought they were seriously poisonous, one area of our garden has plenty of them (a herd of scorpions? a flock?) I moved some wood yesterday and two big ones, one too slow for the shovel, the other lives till next time.

The scorpions in Thailand do have poison, however it is so mild that it is comparable to the sting of a bee or a wasp. The sting is painful but harmless, however some people might develop an allergic reaction. The sting should therefore be immediately disinfected. For conservation reasons please do not kill these animals, but catch them and free them into the wild.

I will continue to kill them. i don't like them.

Seems they are edible too

The Heterometrus Spinifer Scorpions are common to most parts of Thailand and are a delicacy to those who live in the north-east. These scorpions have been delicatly roasted and can be eaten whole.

Due to envolving from an amphibious ancestor they taste similar to a sea prawn with a slighly bitter taste. They can be enjoyed straight out of the can or served with a variety of dips and sauces.

Even a small one gives a bite that will hurt for two days and stop you walking or using an arm.

There's also a place in the states that sells scorpion centered candy.

I've got loads of them living in my pump house and they are basically no bother. Made the mistake of putting my boots on one morning w/out shaking them out first and was stung on my instep. It swelled up and itched pretty strong for a day but that was it.

not in my bloody bed they don't!!

we've recently moved downstairs to a bigger room built under house/ground level. Ever since seeing a scorpion in a stand-off with a small frog in our bathroom I check everywhere before bed. No bugs allowed.

Get some chickens. The scorpions just attack their impenetrable chook legs and the chooks peck them to death.

no shortage of chooks, maybe why scorpions are limited to the deepest darkest part of the garden I'm slowly clearing.
Chooks follow me waiting for next 'snack'. Best yet was a snake head - chopped it off with about about 10cm of body, in raced a 'fearless chook' followed by others and they raced away with it still squirming.

I have heard that the small black scorpions in Thailand are very dangerous, is this true. Not more than 3 months ago i had one on my leg and first though it was a beetle. I brushed it off by my Thai friend seemed to be a little hysterical over the matter and suggested i should have killed it! I'm sure they don't sting unless they are threatened?

According to the site provided about, scorpions are not dangerous.

^ I've been stung by white and black scorpies. The little white ones were the worst. Not pleasant and if you have a reaction they are deadly. Still have a nice scar on the back of my ankle where the first one got me. I didn't mind them around unless there were kids in the area. Usually shooed them away with a broom, but sometimes the little buggers were on a mission in my garden. Kids + scorpions = no for the scorpions.

Oh, actually, the only thing I killed on sight were the centipedes. Bonk those right away, especially if you have kids. Lethal.
