Thread: bloody dust

strueth talk about blowing, the wind dam near blew me little black dog off her chain, and the dust that came with it,, started about lunch time and i reckon i,ve just emptied about 5 cubic mtres of top soil outa me nose, have,nt seen a duster like this since i lived out west, and i certainly did,nt expect to see one this close to the coast, now if it would only rain and lay to rest all that lovely top soil that has been deposited on me newly laid turf

Off the charts

Chris Eiser from the New South Wales Department of Environment and Climate Change says the pollution readings have been off the charts for much of the day.
"Particles we measured today are the highest we measure since we started monitoring in the 1970s," he said.
"They are certainly far in excess of any levels we measured during bushfires. For example, we're measuring around 15,000 micrograms per cubic metre as a concentration.
"Bushfires would normally get around 500 micrograms per cubic metre and on a normal day that would be anywhere between 10 and 20, so certainly a significant event."

Wind-ravaged earth

It was an event that began hundreds of kilometres inland. Topsoil from the drought-ravaged west of NSW was stripped from the earth and pushed by huge wind gusts to the east.
The haze smothered south-east Queensland, forcing firefighters to temporarily ground water-bombing helicopters.
With climate change a hot topic this week far beyond Australia's shores, experts say extreme dust storms like this could become more frequent.
Dr John Leys from the NSW Department of Environment's Dust Watch division says it looks like dust storms such as this will become more prevalent.
"There has been a report from CSIRO that show that this drought is the first of its type, because we've never had droughts which have been so hot," he said.
"Things like this are going to be more prevalent unless we can improve our land management practices so we can maintain more ground cover, so there is less chance of us all blowing away."

That is a serious amount of shit though, better people stay indoors, cant be good snorting that stuff, will it finish quickly ?

started here about 2 hours north of brissy about 1 its now just before 10 pm and its still blowin, albiet not as much and not as much dust that i could tell comeing home..

I saw on the news that Canberra is absolutely covered in red dust.

Must be a real health issue bordering on being dangerous!

Unlike Larvidchr I am in Bangkok and will have to settle for one of the bars here to toast your new found woes Ned!

Next time you go outside just tape your beard to your forehead acting as a dust filter.

Interesting all this happens whilst Rudd is overseas at the g20 climate change meeting .

FB update from a friend whose husband is a pilot. "poor Dean was paxing to Sydney for work - 3 hrs late leaving cos of the dust storm and 1 hr sitting on the tarmac at sydney waiting for a gate - glad it wasn't me!"

fire break is all sorted jettie, and enough water in the tanks and dam so i should be ok, best break out the 'home brew' kit just incase they start to run out of beer, now that would be a bloody disaster!
the missus is bloody spewin, at least its not my fault, she came home on tuesday had her usual spit at me for leaveing the house 'dirty' [ i mean how much mess does 1 bloke make!], and started her usual household chores of sweeping mopping dusting and whatever else sheilas do around the house while i,m ignoreing them, and then yesterday the bloody duster , not funny, i,m told, everything and i mean everything is covered even me bloody barbie, i best make sure she cleans that before the footy on the weekend, otherwise she,ll be out of a job and she,ll be sleeping on the couch all next week..oh bugger, i just had a thought i best check me bikes not dirty, maybe i should make her wash that before sat morning too
