Foreigner gate and fee at Route 66 RCA

I almost went to a night club last week called route 66 in a strip of clubs called RCA (near the new airport link I think). There were two entry gates, one for foreigners and one for Thais. The Thais got in free though one gate and the foreigners had to pay 200 baht. This made me change my mind and we went somewhere else. Is this legal? It seemed like apartheid.

otherwise dont go route 66, its shit and overcrowded anyway, they dont really need nor want your custom.

I don't live in Thailand and the guys on the gate said Thai ID (citizen) or passport only. Do you have one of those then?

To be fair the winging brit did say "airport link" - and its probably not far from that terminal they are building for the sky train right to the airport right? sorry my bk geography is a bit hazy.

However, for OP - if this is your first and only experience of such discrimination in Thaland, lucky you. Get used to it, and get some form of Thai ID card (which works 50% or so of the time). The rest of the time you have the option of :
    a) lumping it or
    b) walking away.
    c) going back to blighty.

Are you seriously trying to compare yourself to a guy who spent 22 years in jail because you were asked to pay 200 baht to enter a nightclub??!?!

They are a business, can do what they want. Don't like it? Then don't go, simple.

    Why is it a scam?

The price is clear, you can pay it if you want, or not pay it if you don't want.

    Hardly a scam.

Why bother with nightclubs ? Stay at home and have a beer and a wank , save yourself a lot of wedge and loads of grief.

I reckon two-tier pricing is fair enough for national parks and such, it is a bit on the nose for private businesses and the like though.

For the former the rationale is clear; Thais (or foreigners with Work Permits) contribute taxes which in turn go towards the running and up-keep of such places. Back home in most touristed places locals (i.e. local residents) could get in free on proof of residence, all others had to pay.

And as to the latter, it may stink but as has already been said nobody is forced to go and you can always vote with your feet.

In NZ? Maybe I've been away too long, I don't remember anyone having to pay a fee to enter a national park in NZ.

No, National parks are free (for the most part I think?).

I was talking more about 'developed' tourist attractions, specifically those from my home town, like Rainbow and Fairy Springs, Whakarewarewa etc.

Actually last time we were back I took my wife to Whaka and had to pay. Despite growing up there I didn't have any current proof of residence.

same for the animal park just up the road from my mums place.

though the rationale there is more that it is a discount for local residents so that they will take visitors to the park.

Seems a tad extreme to get into a club, was it Eden?
