Sorry SC, I seem to have skipped this post of yours.
I think teaching is a very viable option if you are already financially secure. If you are tired of working in heavy industry, trust me, the oil and gas industry is just as bad, lots of pressure and it's very hire and fire (more hire at the moment due to the oil price).

I'm in agreement along the lines of SanukCanuk's thoughts. Only difference being if I don't work it out in Thailand (Same early 2007 timeframe) I'm not going back to the USA. I'll work in either Singapore, Okinawa, or other spot in Japan. I'll give TEFLering a shot for additional savings. But I have my doubts being a TEFLer will grow on me.

    This constant harping goes nowhere;

A: Why do like wearing that hat?

    B: Dunno, just do.

    A: But why - it's a horrible hat.

    B: So - I like wearing it.

    A: But why?

Carry on like this for a few hundred pages and you're gettng close to how interesting this is.

As my old postman Desmond used to say, 'What's it got to do with you big nose?'
Let me help you understand danbo.

A well known yet not particularly popular identity comes on the forum and starts a thread about 'blue M&Ms'.
The thread takes the same course as the one you describe above except that it's nasty, there's insinuations of violence, it's unpleasant to read.

The popular identity's thoughts or questions on blue M&Ms weren't the reason for the descent into a purile shit-fest it was the incessant personal attacks on the identity.

Decent respectable citizens, like yourself, look on from a distance and mutter "terrible show that, not cricket at all!" and with good reason. It's not something anyone would want to read.

    But here's the rub...

The little posse that gathers to hurl abuse on our identity will then stand back, hands and faces covered with the shit and mud they sling and point to the thread and say
"that poster X is no good! Every time he starts a thread it turns into a shitfight!"

I'm not defending TEFL threads, merely highlighting the hypocracy of the actions of some of our more self righteous posters.

I think if you actually read Sur Burr's thread you will see that so far it hasn't headed in the wrong direction. By any other posters and he has listened to what other people have said rather thans saying YOU ARE ALL SCUM AND WRONG

Sir Burr - You are a shit stirring maggot in the guise of Smeg.

No really, I don't teach English I teach Science. Same deal though shit salary etc. However I was well off in the UK but I have slowly chipped into the gold supply back hme and am now having to look for ways to top it back up.

I have less than a year left here in me. My temper is getting shorter and I am likely to lose my rag with people on the street pretty soon. Which is not a good situation to be in.

My opitons are limited. I can head back to Blighty which really isn't an option for me but a last resort. I could study a MA,MSc,PgDip but that is going to cost 30,000 quid for a couple of years.

I will most likely head off to a country where my salary for teaching English will be good and I will get my head down and work like a dog.

My ideal situation is to walk into a position anywhere in the world on Sustainable Development particurarly training local poor peopple.

So Sir Burr if that is ok with you I will go now.

Feel free to Smeggify any reponse with TEFL'rs are scum etc etc.

So the Thailand life is going to finish for me for a while until I feel I am ready to come back and appreciate it again.

    M

You don't have to worry about this sort of thing if your parents have already paid for the land and house back home. Especially if you're an only child. You can waste away your life as a young person doing the TEFL thing and then when the parents kick off just go home and live there or sell it off and buy a nice little condo or ranch house. (Or a trailer) ... if you've never married then it won't be too hard to go back home.

Morning Poolcleaner. On your usual wind up? Sir Burr posed some very very good questions which in general I agree with. His style is alot smoother and more skillfull than the stuff put out by you and your mate smeg.

So you admit it's not the content od Smeg's posts that you disagree with, it's his style that makes it so important for you to trash his threads.

I hope someday someone decides that your style is worth stalking and trashing agingone, you truly deserve it.

Now popoff back to ajarn and leave us alone.

Why dont you take another holiday Poolcleaner? I enjoy posting both here and Ajarn. I love to see your boorish style and your love of berating women.

Dont you fit in the catagory the Sir Burr is talking about? I know for sure I damn well dont. I lead a comfortable life. Put money into my retirement account monthly and enjoy the job I have had a long time at the University.

Try to get over the fact that some of us have made a life in Thailand to be proud of teaching. I think that must be at the bottom of your hate, and why you love to tell people to fuck off back to ajarn.

Just a few thoughts Poolcleaner. I am into Wally's style of posting. Non confrontational. Not your style at all.

A bit of reality and you don't like it?
Can dish it out but you can't take it back.

Why should I take another holiday?

You float in here when ajarn's boring to check out if Smeg's latest posts or threads are in, post some trash on there, wind him up, then demand he should be banned.

You bring nothing to this forum.
Smeg can start a thread that will generate debate.
    What have you started?
    6 threads.

Considering your input, what right do you have to criticise Smeg.
He's far more valuable here than you are.

I'm fed up with you and your little tribe who descend on anything Smeg or DJPat post with your pissy little jibes but when one of your leading lights, the amazing Squirrel, starts thread after thread of total bullshit, where are you and Lily?
Where was the 'style police' then?

Just a few thoughts agingone, this place was started because what people wanted wasn't allowed or accepted on ajarn.
    It's not a teacher's site.
    Go home.

No mate I will stay right here as I have other business interests outside of teaching.

I have never called for smeg to be banned but sure I have disagreed with him.

I was asked to join this site by members who I respect, something that I no longer have for you. Better get used to it mate. As I have no plans to go anywhere.

Some people can adust; some people cannot.

I know a good number of people that returned to their home-country after years in LOS who got good jobs and then bought a house.

OK, now for the bit I don't understand....

There are obviously some English teachers on this forum that could maybe shed some light.
For those English teachers that are earning say less than 40,000 Bt a month, why do you do it?
Why do people choose to become architects?

Why do people choose to live in Minnesota, instead of Arizona?

    It's called....personal preference.

    Everyone is different.

If you are in it for the joys of teaching, wouldn't it be more rewarding to teach attentive, inquisitive students? If so, wouldn't it be more rewarding to teach in your own country?
In the U.S. the students in the public education system are not very attentive and inquisitive.

If you are in it to be able to live in LOS, then what are you going to do for retirement funds. One thing I learnt early on, was that it isn't how much money you earn that is important, it's the money you save.
Surely, English teachers in LOS just don't earn enough money to put aside enough for retirement? Isn't this just postponing the inevitable?
You leave LOS for a while, save and invest, and buy real-estate.

    That simple really.

The average person (Westerner) has a life expectancy of about 78.

Surely there is enough time to plan ahead financially (compound interest). In a person's 20 and thirties they can set the foundations.

Also: retirement in the West is basically over if you were born after 1955, for the most part.

Well feel free to contribute something other than insults at posters who are more talented than yourself, as you said, envy is a horrible thing.

As for losing your respect, would I want to have the respect of someone like you?
No, not likely, I could never turn my back on you.

Look forward to you adding to your 6 threads.

I was having a chuckle the other day at the hypocracy shown by particular members, yourself included, about how TEFLers are not respected by certain members.
There's one member who has shown disdain for TEFLers for about three years on all sorts of Thai forums. His criticism of teachers and jokes aimed at TEFLers has remained constant throughout.
His views are beyond those of Smeg.

Yep, everytime I read a post where you suck up to this guy I have a laugh.
    You're such a coward.
I'm sure dirtydog must wonder as well.
