That's probably still there from our British heritage I suppose but we are slowly extruding it.
Another generation and we should be clear of it as well as have a decent flag and not the bum wipe we have today! Yes we will keep the Southern Cross thank you.
eli, you never base your post on facts or truth anyway, so don't expect anybody to take notice of an old fool like you.

If this is the flag the Aussies vote in then I would be happy to stand by it.
First we have to get rid of this royalist sentiment that still is prevelent down under.
With regard to the Union Jack do you as a Scotsman hold any sentiment for it?
This is a serious question and I am not trying to wind you up mate. I would just like your opinion as I would an Irishman and or a Welshman.
The St. Andrew's Cross you have posted above forms part of the Union Flag as does the English St. George's Cross. The Union Flag is the George Cross overlying the Scottish St. Andrew's Cross.Originally Posted by Loy Toy
The name 'Union' refers to the 1707 Union of England and Scotland.

Mortals you defy the Gods, I sentence you to travel among unknown stars, until you find the Kingdom of Hades, your bodies will stay as lifeless as stone.
When King James VI of Scotland inherited the throne of England and was crowned James I of England in 1603, the crowns of the Kingdom of England (which since 1535 had included Wales) and the Kingdom of Scotland were united in a personal union through him. Despite this Union of the Crowns, each kingdom remained an independent state.[9]
On 12 April 1606, a new flag to represent this regal union between England and Scotland was specified in a royal decree, according to which the flag of England also representing Wales by implication, (a red cross with a white background, known as St George's Cross) and the flag of Scotland (a white saltire with a blue background, known as the Saltire or Saint Andrew's Cross) would be "joyned together according to the forme made by our heralds, and sent by Us to our Admerall to be published to our Subjects."[3] forming the Flag of Great Britain and first union flag. This royal flag was at first only for use at sea on civil and military ships of both Scotland and England.[12] In 1634, King Charles I restricted its use to the monarch's ships[13]. Land forces continued to use their respective national banners. After the Acts of Union 1707, the flag gained a regularised status, as "the ensign armorial of the Kingdom of Great Britain", the newly created state. It was then adopted by land forces as well, although the blue field used on land-based versions more closely resembled that of the blue of the flag of Scotland.

Thanks mate for the info but if the Union Jack had a predominant position on the St Andrews Cross would that be acceptable for you?
It's the other way round, that's what I have tried to explain to you.Originally Posted by Loy Toy

This thread started out as Aus 'v' UK and as i have never been i can't comment on the comparison
the UK is pretty shit now though so Aus would have to be a real shit place to lose out!

There's no Welsh element in the Union Flag either.Originally Posted by Loy Toy
This is the Lion Rampant or what is known as the Scottish Royal Standard.
It was Robert The Bruce's insignia when he defeated the English at Bannockburn in 1314.
My question to you Tuddy, and as I know you have spent quite some time in Australia would you be happy for Australia to retain the Union Jack on their flag or would you prefer them to have a more independent representation effectively cutting ties with the old dart?
I also understand you retain Australian residency papers but please correct me and if I am wrong.
It's up to the Australian people to decide, in their own good time.
Some people are quite passionate about changing it, most either opposed or not bothered at this point.
Demographically it's a matter of time really, as less of the Oz population owes their ethnicity or cultural allegiance to the UK. No big deal.
