New Highs of stupidity in Siam

Spent the day at HuaHin beach today, lazing on the deck chairs and enjoying a cold beer when all peace and tranquility was ruined by overly-officious 'police'.

They arrived in force, complete with tape measure to check the distance the deck chairs were extended out onto the beach. Aften measuring, they marked a line in the sand and everyone had to move behind the line...actually drawn in the sand it looked like a yellow line to me and left me wondering if I ws at the beach or back in some seedy bar in Bangkok!

It looks like you were outside the Hilton. Unless you really like sitting cheek by jowl with other farangs why not find a quieter part of the beach?

I have seen the police before in that area handing out notices to sunbathers ( I am guessing that they were some sort of notice about not taking bikini tops off ) - but it looked like a token exercise for the benefit of an accompanying news reporter as the copper handed out two and then left.

Probably city hall police, they do that here in Jomtien, it all seems quite ridiculous, the chairs have to be a certain amount of cms apart and in nice straight lines, fok me aint they got anything else to do?

Listening to what was being said it appears they are allowed 23 meters from the wall onto the sand...any more and they get closed down for 7 days....the cops were taking pics before they moved people back so they enforce the closures...much like running a bar I guess...

also DDs right...chairs must be in straight rows and not too close together...also must have a drain between each chair owner...how can i explain...you have an area to set out your chairs and either side you must create a small drain for the water to run down to the beach....don't ask me 'what water' cause i don't know!

They do it here in Samui also, except for the straight row line-up..
I find it understandable , the beach does not belong to the resorts even if they act as if it did.
The resorts are doing their monthly expansion by buying more rental chairs and suddenly there is no room left for those who don't rent a chair.
You have probably noticed that the chairs are taken away in the evening, beeing put up again early in the morning.
Some resorts are 'reserving' almost all of the beach in front of them already at 7 in the morning by doing it this way.

In Phuket we have the same problem with the damned sun loungers. I flipping hate them. There's nowhere left on the beaches to just sit on the sand and watch the sea without feeling like there's a dozen eyes boring into the back of your head from the sun-lounge occupiers.

The best thing the tsunami did was to wash away those damned loungers for a few months.

I got to admit I prefer the second picture, I prefer the idea of going to a beach and laying on a towel, the regimented rows of deck chairs just don't appeal to me.

How many hotels they got along that beach road now? Couple of years ago there was nothing between Karon and the Arcadia. Last I saw (Tsunami time) they were just completing the Sawasdee and more were being planned.

I was in Phuket 8 years ago and then I returned 2 years ago. I was in shock.

I don't mind the chairs on the beach, I like to have one. I hate sitting on the sand. But it would be nice if it was just a few rows of chairs, not hundreds of rows of empty chairs. It would be nicer if it was in limited numbers.

Also worse than the rows of empty chairs, are the thousands of half-naked fat farangs sitting on the beach

Sorry, I don't know much about the hotels there or what is being built. I don't actually know who OWNs these sun loungers. Some have a name painted on them, but I don't recognise it as a hotel name.

I think it's a free-for-all - whoever's got the most clout gets the most area to dump/hire their loungers.

I believe that in Patong there is an association of sun lounger operators, or something like that. Immediately after the tsunami the governor of Phuket or mayor of Patong swore that he would keep a part of the beach lounger-free. I don't know if that is the case but, if so, I think the excess loungers have ended up at Karon beach. Bastards!

I cant see what the big deal is.

You either pay 20baths for a bottle of water and relax on the beach with food and drink servive .... or you move somewhere else..

I'll be in Phuket (Patong & Karon) in a couple of week's time, but I shan't be doing any sunbathing as I've got to run around like a twat in the sun wearing tight shorts (for da laydees - aye!).
