    Can you sleep?

    I can't bloody sleep.

I work 2 day shifts and 3 late shifts and that flucks the sleep patern right up. Today was a late shift. I had 4 beers which I thought would send me to sleep but I've sobered up now and sleep is not on the cards.

My three dogs are asleep around my feet and I'm jealous.

It's weird the shit that goes on in your street. The monks are not up yet for thier morning rounds but there are still people up and about.

What the helll are they doing!

^ Your schedule is too irregular. Change your hours of work, if you can.

If not, get a different job.

Beer/alcohol will not ais your sleep. It often disrupts it.

    Agreed.
    Get your shifts changed.
At least 7 days of each shift so that your body clock can adjust.

The problem is that your alcoholic and four beers wasn't enough.

Weird, just watched a show on sleep last night. Apparently the only thing for it is to get yourself into a routine. Go to bed everynight at the same time and if you can't sleep after 30min get up and go read for 20min before trying again. Not very practical to your current situation though FP.

Also they showed evidence to suggest that sleeping pills do more long term harm than good (increased risk of heart attacks and cancer amongst other things) and don't really work anyway.

Exactly the same problem as you Prince.

Fit as a fiddle at 3 in the morning and want to flake out at 5am. Sleep about 3-4 hours a day at best. Can't go on like this as I feel like shit.

Have to agree with the above! Its all about routine mate. Alcohol and sleeping tablets forget about it.

I, like you have to find one (a routine) that suits my lifestyle.

That's another thing the show mentioned. Whilst that's obviously not enough sleep for LT, apparently the whole 8hrs a night thing's an unsubstantiated old-wives tale. Research shows that people who sleep 6 - 7hrs per night live longer than those that sleep 8+ hrs.

yup, i sleep much more soundly since i quit drinking.
I have added a fairly tough daily exercise programme too (inspired by the milkman thread)

i generally only sleep between 5 and 6 hours a night but these days it's uninterrupted by a bursting bladder at around 4.00 a.m.

I suffer badly from odd sleeping arrangments.

I go to bed around 10pm everynight - some nights I make it all night.

MOre often than not though I wake up wide awake for an hour around 2am and again around 5am.

Some nights I sleep from 10pm and wake up at 12:30am ready to go.

Last night was a bad nights sleep.

You could give those anti-histamine sleeping tablets a go. I hate them. Make me feel like shit but they do work.

It's one of those jobs where you never really feel like your off the clock.

But I also do graphic design, todays my day off but a friend just called up who has a magazine add deadline at 12 and he can't find his regular designer. This could be dangerous because it may turn into a liquid lunch when were done.

Righto, cheers. Yeah I can understand where you're coming from. Must be hard to switch off and obviously not helping your sleeping patterns any.

I don't know how long you have been on your sched. but seems like the longer it is the easier it gets.
When I was dredging for years we always changed shift once a week on sat at the end of day shift you took 8 hrs. off and came back for graveyard, then next weekcame back on swing then got 36 off and came back on days.
Got so if you wasn't working you could just lay down and sleep, but was never really rested either.
as you get older, and I am OLD, you get so you have insomnia I guess so anyway my doc gave me some XANAX when I was in the hospital, I am a recovered Alkie so I do not like dope or the feeling of being out of control, ya know the feeling we always used to look for, drink for and drug for?? Well now I dont like it so didnt care for XANAX, and he gace me some lorazapam and it is a light, very short acting dope, it only lasts about a 1/2 hour but will shut your head down long enough to get to sleep. You might try to get some, comes in 1 MG tabs and I take1/2 at bedtime and read for 20 mins and go to sleep, after I got used to it I stay asleep til morning [6 hours], but I also take 1.5 mg of melatonin when I take the lorazapam.
Now the Melatonin is something made by the[ pitutary?] gland that makes us sleepy at dark, and we tend to quit making it as we get older.

While I rarely have problems sleeping, I have used Melatonin for years - usually when jet-lagged or when I need to adjust my sleeping patterns after a long holiday (or heavy weekend).

Melatonin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You can buy it is health food shops in most countries, but unfortunately I haven't seen it for sale in Thailand. I tend to stock up every time I am in Singapore....

I'm actively trying to adjust my sleeping pattern right now. What with starting a new job soon where I'll actually have to work trying to get used to getting up a lot earlier. Struggling a bit right now, mind I did only start this morning so fingers crossed!

I buy it online and they ship it here for about $10 freight and I buy a dozen bottles of different things from an online suppliment store.
I think I bought 6 acidophilus and 6 melatonin last order.
so if I buy a few it pays freight with what I save on sales prices,, usuallu buy 2 and get 2 free or like that.

Same here, I have managed a Restaurant here in BKK, very difficult because you always end up burning the candle at both ends.

Ah, sleep! don't use it myself. until I collapse for a few days of 12 - 16 hours rest periods. I've given up. I sleep when it works for me and I work when it doesn't.

I worked shift work for a few years and found swing the biggest problem. Graveyard & days were OK. I don;t like taking drugs to help me sleep I find them much more enjoyable when used for recreation.

What has worked for me best of all is regular exercise every day. I rode the bicycle everyday until I got bronchitis but that's gone so I'm back on riding 20k a day first thing, then work. Thing is, I'll get involved in some code and fight sleep, next thing you know, the fuckin birds are singin and the monks are chanting. Who wants to go for a bike ride when they're burnt out and fuzy-headed? Set a schedule and stick to it. As Ant mentioned if you can;t sleep get up read or whatever until you feel like going back to bed staying in bed and trying to force sleep is counter-productive.

No caffeine for six hours or more before sleep is good. I rarely eat anywhere near bedtime either. Drink less whatever before bed too so your bladder doesn't wake you up.

The exercise suggestion definatly helps. I normally go down the gym on both my days off and always sleep well on those nights.
