A friend died today

Not a close friend, a neighbor and some one to share a beer or two with. Anyway Steves been in a coma for 6 weeks so it was expected that he would pass on at some time soon.

Thai's seem to deal with it well, his wife is cooking and organising the food, the tents are up on the road, their 6 year old son who is a close friend of my daughters seems quite exited about the whole thing. The only ones that seem rather down are the farangs, I guess Thais have a different view on the on consequences of death.

A mate from the Bangers passed away on Monday. A big shock as he was in fine spirits on Saturday at the pub. These events always make one think a bit.

You would have to see it to believe it, Steves in a refrigerated coffin in the front room, in which there are 10 kids playing around doing kids stuff.

On the front balcony are 20 Thai woman playing a gambling game, 20 baht notes flying around.

Sounds like BF's funeral. He was a musician & there was a lot of music - one day was all of the HH bands doing a concert to his refrigerated coffin & littl'un & his friends headbanging & playing air guitar. The rest of the time they were running & playing. I was worried how little littl'un seemed to be affected.
This is Thailand, I guess. Things are done differently. Maybe, in the long run, that's good.

Simply the consequence of life.
Sorry for your loss. I have been to Thai funerals where the family was devastated, inconsolable.

Nothing wrong with accepting death as the logical conclusion to life but I think we'd all like to have a tear or two shed on our passing, a thoughtful beer drunk in our memory or a comment such as this made:

I agree. One unexpected benefit I got from marrying a Thai is a more accepting attitude toward death. My wife talks freely about the impending deaths of sick and old family members as if they're going on vacation. It seemed callous at first, but I realized that Thais seem to treat death as a very natural transition and nothing more. As a result of our marriage, I feel emotionally more prepared as my parents and other loved ones near the end of the road.

I'm quite taken by this refrigerated coffin idea.

Never thought about it before. It seems quite logical.

Being a tight bugger I do expect that if I am ever put in a refrigerated coffin then I want some of the beers and cakes etc kept in there as well.

Not positive but think Thai's believe in reincarnation, if they've been "good" boys and girls (made lots of merit and lived a clean life) they get to step up a place in the hierarchy of life.

So...... it can be seen as an opportunity to improvement.

At least that's the point of all merit making from what I can tell. Indeed if it works a celebration rather than sadness is in order.

Funerals and death rituals are for the living, not the deceased.
